What is ACL surgery?

ACL surgery refers to a surgical procedure that is performed to reconstruct a torn or damaged anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee. The ACL is a strong band of tissue that connects the thigh bone to the shin bone and helps in stabilizing the knee joint.

The surgery typically involves removing the damaged ligament and replacing it with a graft from another part of the patient’s body or a donor. The graft is usually a piece of tendon taken from the patient’s own hamstring or patellar tendon or a tissue graft from a donor.

The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia and may require a hospital stay of one to two days. Rehabilitation after surgery is a critical component of the recovery process, as it involves physical therapy and exercises to restore knee strength and range of motion.
