Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the biggest names in world sports, returned to Manchester United in 2021, hoping to change the team’s fortunes. The English giants last won the Champions League in 2008 and Premier League in 2012.

In his first season back at United, where he blossomed in his early years, Ronaldo managed to scored 24 goals in 38 appearances. He was their top-scorer across competitions.

The 37-year-old missed United’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia due to family reasons amid reports he wants to quit the club, but he reported to the training ground earlier this week to discuss his future with new boss Erik ten Hag.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner was “happy to be back” playing for United after he appeared for 45 minutes in the 1-1 draw against Spanish team Rayo Vallecano in a friendly match at Old Trafford.

However, when the season starts, there is a good chance he will be benched. Man United will play Brighton at home on Sunday. As per the Sun, Ten Hag wants to stick to his pre-season front three of Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.

The Red Devils beat Liverpool, Melbourne Victory and Crystal Palace in the pre-season. They drew with Rayo Vallecano and Aston Villa. Ten Hag and co’s only defeat came against Atletico Madrid.

With uncertainities over Ronaldo’s future at the Old Trafford, Eric Ten Hag is expected to push other players and manage to set the combination early on.
