Manchester City retained their Premier League title after second-placed Arsenal were defeated 1-0 by Nottingham Forest on Saturday. With Mikel Arteta-led losing, no team can now compete with Pep Guardiola’s men, who have three matches to go.

City next face Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday. The Premier League champions already have the trophy in their cabinet – they won it last year too – and could go on and present it to their home fans.

The 2022-23 title is Man City’s seventh league crown in 12 years. All their successful runs have come under Pep Guardiola. The team will also face Inter Milan in their bid to win a first Champions League title in June. The European final will take place in Istanbul.

Coming into Saturday’s match, Arsenal were trailing City by four points and three games in hand. The Gunners needed a win to keep their title hopes alive. However, they never recovered from Taiwo Awoniyi’s 19th-minute goal.

Now City have an unassailable four-point lead.

“To have helped the club win a third straight Premier League title is something very special. The Premier League is without doubt the most demanding and competitive league in the world so that tells you everything about what an achievement this is. This squad is so talented and so special and to have been captain this season has been an enormous privilege,” Man City captain Ilkay Gündogan said.

Arsenal led the Premier League table for most of the season. They had an eight-point advantage on April 1. However, the Gunners only won two of eight games.

Manager Mikel Arteta said that it is a very sad day.

“We have been working for 11 months with that aim and have been on top for so many days. We have competed but we didn’t have enough. Now we must heal. It is very painful. I am extremely sad and I have to find a way to lift the players,” Arteta said after the Forest loss.

Nottingham Forest, with Saturday’s win, has ensured top-flight football next year.
