Argentina, needing a win to qualify for the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup 2022, scored two second-half goals against Poland. They led 2-0.

Mexico, on the other hand, took a 2-0 lead against Saudi Arabia in the other Group C game. 

Saudi Arabia in the final minutes hit back at Mexico with a goal, making it 2-1. If Mexico scored, they would advance on GD. 

If no goals are scored in both games, Argentina and Poland will make to the round of 16. The latter will be level with Mexico on points and goal difference. The decision of who moves ahead will be taken on the fair play record.

If Mexico and Poland are level on points and goal difference, it will be decided by:

1. Goals scored

2. Head-to-head

3. Fair play record

Poland, with five yellow cards, have a better fair play record than Mexico, who have seven.

Mexico, who have a reputation for playing a physical game, received a yellow card against Saudi Arabia when Edson Alvarez put a stiff challenge against Abdulhamid.

What is the fair play rule?

If the teams can’t be separated on points and goal difference, then the fair play record is looked at. Each team is given a ‘conduct score’. A point is deducted for each yellow card, two points for a red after two bookings and four points for a straight red.
