Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman paid tribute to the former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly saying he was ‘unconventionally and fiercely proud’ and always wore his heart on his sleeve.

Laxman tweeted an image of the iconic moment where the BCCI President is waving his shirt in the Lord’s balcony after India defeated England in the NatWest Trophy final. The image is considered as one of the defining moments of Ganguly’s career.

In a series of tweets, the former India cricketer expressed gratitude to the greats that he had shared the dressing room with. Laxman showered praise on Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble and Ganguly.

“Empowering youngsters who went on to do wonders for the country was credited to his great leadership qualities,” he further said about Ganguly.

On July 23, 2002, India had successfully chased down a target of 326 against England with two wickets and three balls to spare. This is regarded as one of India’s greatest run-chases, and was orchestrated by Mohammad Kaif and Yuvraj Singh.

Ganguly, who heads the country’s top cricketing body, is one of India’s most successful captains. He has led India to victory in 21 Tests and 76 one-day internationals. He also took India to the final of the 2003 ODI World Cup.
