Amazon Quiz (April 11, 2022): Which geographical location in California has given its name to the latest MacOS version?

Monterey Bay

Catalina

Mojave

High Sierra

Answer: Monterey Bay

Apple, which has a long tradition of naming its MacOS versions after places in California, named its latest MacOS version, 12, ‘Monterey’ after Monterey Bay in the state.

Monterey Bay is located in the south of the San Francisco Bay Area, south of the major city of San Jose. The first European to discover the bay was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, who found it on November 16, 1542, while on a Spanish naval expedition. Cabrillo named the bay Bahía de los Pinos, supposedly after the abundant pine trees found in the area.

Apple had named MacOS versions 10 to 10.8 after big cats, namely Cheetah, Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion.

From version 10.9, Apple chose the theme of places in California, with version 10.9 being named Mavericks after a popular surfing spot.

Since then, new iterations of Apple’s MacOS versions have all been named in a similar style, with versions 10.10 to 12 being named Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina, Big Sur, and Monterrey respectively.

Apple’s naming convention for operating systems for its iPhones and iPads, however, is different. Instead of names of animals or places, iOS versions are named in numerical order without any special name assigned to them.
