Epic Games,
owners of popular online multi-player game Fortnite, will launch a fresh push
on Monday to convince a judge to restore the title on Apple’s App Store.

Apple users
can only download applications on its devices from the App Store, with the
Cupertino, California-based tech giants charging a 30 per cent commission on
money spent on the apps by users.

However, Epic
Games is challenging this practice with the dispute becoming a rallying cry for
developers who say that the policies of App Store are monopolistic.

App
developers like Epic and music streaming service Spotify have collaborated in
efforts to negotiate new terms with major online app stores run by Apple and Google.

While
Google also takes a commission for apps on the Play Store, it allows users to
download applications from other sources.

The
Collaboration for App Fairness advocacy group said that it seeks legal and
regulatory changes for the app stores.

This comes
amid increasing criticism for the fees and other terms imposed by the app
stores, and the legal challenges by both Epic and Spotify to Apple’s commission.

Monday’s hearing,
slated to be held before a federal judge in California, will focus on whether
Apple should restore Fortnite on the App Store while the lawsuit plays out.

The game was
removed from the App Store on August 13 after Epic released updates that
sidestepped revenue sharing with Apple.

Previously
in the case, the judge had refused an emergency injunction requested by Epic, terming
Fortnite’s eviction by Apple a “self-inflicted wound”.

However, Epic
maintained its stance against Apple, saying that the tech giants were “a monopolist”.

The dispute
has caused Fortnite fans using Apple devices to no longer have access to the latest
game updates, including the new season released at the end of August.
