Lucknow police will soon install smart cameras in the city that will identify women in distress, based on their facial expressions and alert the police, Times of India reported. The step is being taken to keep a check on cases of eve-teasing, stalking and other threats.

Speaking at a function in Uttar Pradesh’s capital city on Wednesday, Lucknow police commissioner DK Thakur said that they had identified 200 hotspots where there was considerable movement of women and where most complaints originated from

Five artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled cameras, installed at these spots, will have the capability to alert the nearest police station in case of an emergency, the police commissioner said.

“These cameras will become active as soon as the expressions of a woman in distress change. Before she takes out the phone and dials 100 or UP 112 for help, an alert will reach the police,” DK Thakur said, Times of India reported.

The police commissioner said that Lucknow is the only city in the state “which has been selected nationally to be developed as a ‘safe city’ for women.”

“At least 31 pink booths, 10 patrolling cars and 100 scooties, managed by women cops, are already deployed” in Lukhnow, DK Thakur said.
