Social media company Meta is revamping its main Facebook feed to prioritize content discovery as opposed to follower-generated posts, according to a blog post on Thursday, as it morphs its key moneymaker to become more like TikTok in a bid to generate user growth and retention.

The company’s “Reels” product, is similar to TikTok’s short video format. In recent months, company executives are pushing for “Reels” to become more like TikTok to attract young social media users.

In a blogpost, Meta revealed that the “Home” feed will be the first thing users will see when they open the Facebook app and will initially display popular content from users that they do not follow. The app will suggest these posts based on its machine learning algorithm and to that end, will be investing in artificial intelligence to ensure smooth rollout.

“Feeds” on the other hand, will overwhelmingly display content from friends, pages, groups, and users that they follow. This tab presents content chronologically, without any preferential ranking, revealed Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg in a Facebook blog post. Meta says that advertisements will still be present on both tabs.

Meta is leaning hard into algorithmic recommendations for its user base in the past few months as TikTok is becoming more and more oppressive in its growth. The push is a stark shift from Meta’s (known as Facebook before its rebranding in 2021) 2018 plan to feature content from friends and family on a user’s news feed.

Earlier this month, Chief Product Officer Chris Cox had told employees that their data centres would see a fivefold increase to the number of graphic processing units by the end of the year in an effort to provide extra AI computing power.

Even Instagram is getting a revamp as the company is testing a more “immersive” experience. Testing began recently. The company in a move to promote user engagement will be allowing its U.S. users to shop for products directly from their chats with others.
