As India gears up to celebrate the 75th year of its Independence from 200-year long British rule, the multimedia app Snapchat has launched a new interesting feature to commemorate the I-Day. The feature introduces a new landmark lens for the historic India Gate, situated in New Delhi. A first for the national capital, the lens is powered by Snapchat’s AR technology which enhances the beauty of the iconic monument.

How does the feature work?
To use this feature, a Snapchat user must be in close vicinity of India Gate. Once the location is tracked, the app will send a notification for the user to point the camera at the iconic India Gate.
Once done, the India Gate will be beautified and embellished with the Indian flag, and around the monument and tricolour outlines will also be visible. A tag sticker saying “I love India” will also be a part of the new Independence Day filter. Here’s how the filter looks like.
Snapchat users, who try this feature, can share their posts using the hashtag #merabharatmahaan.
Snapchat’s India Gate lens marker is the American multimedia apps third Landmark Lens in India after The Gateway of India in Mumbai and the Taj Mahal in Agra.
“Snapchat’s Landmark Lenses enable augmented reality experiences that can transform the world’s most iconic landmarks in real-time,” said Durgesh Kaushik, Head of Market Development at Snapchat India.
Kaushik added that the strategy of Snapchat is to focus on deepening the locally and culturally relevant experience for users residing in India with the help of creative tools, partnerships, product developments, and community engagement.
India will celebrate its 75th Independence Day on Sunday. The day marks the attainment of freedom from the 200 years of British rule and pays tribute to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the freedom struggle. The theme for this year’s Independence Day is ‘Nation First, Always First.’
