California-based Zoom Video Communications Inc on
Tuesday, announced to open a technology centre in Bengaluru as part of an
expansion push in the country, reported Reuters.

The company will soon begin hiring in the country.

Velchamy Sankarlingam, Zoom’s president of product and
engineering, told a virtual news conference, “We are looking at potential
areas of expansion for the new technology centre include research and development,
IT, security as well business operations.”

The company has an office and a data centre in Mumbai
and a second data centre in Bengaluru.

Sankarlingam said, depending on the growth, the US-based
company could add more local data centres.

Though users of the video conferencing app have surged
during the pandemic time, the company has also come under fire over privacy and
security issues, spurring it to roll out major upgrades.

Earlier, the Union Home Ministry had said that Zoom is
“not a safe platform”, joining other countries in expressing concern about the
security of its services.

“Zoom reached out and engaged with the Indian
government and so far we’re optimistic,” Zoom’s Chief Operating Officer Aparna
Bawa said, without elaborating.

It competes with Cisco Systems Inc’s (CSCO.O) Webex,
Microsoft Corp’s (MSFT.O) Teams and Google’s (GOOGL.O) Meet platform. Its
Indian rivals include Reliance’s (RELI.NS) JioMeet and Bluejeans, a Verizon
(VZ.N) application that has been customised for India by Bharti Airtel
(BRTI.NS).
