content delivery network (CDN), is a geographically distributed network of proxy servers and their data centers. CDNs are also known as Content Distribution Network.

The goal of a CDN is to provide high availability and performance to the end users by distributing the service. CDNs were created in 1990s to improve the performance of internet.

Since then, CDNs have grown to serve a large portion of the Internet content today, including web objects like text, graphics and scripts, downloadable objects like media files, software, documents, applications, live streaming media, on-demand streaming media, and social media sites.

Massive internet outage hit several websites across the world in June. The website of US and UK governments were also hit by the disruption. The glitch was caused due to software bug at Fastly.  Fastly is a content delivery network that helps websites speed up loading times and present their content to users. Its clients include Deliveroo, Pinterest and Shazam.

Fastly had issued a statement saying, “We identified a service configuration that triggered disruptions across our POPs globally and have disabled that configuration. Our global network is coming back online.”
