As it has been reported that The Crown is set to begin its filming for season 5 in July, there has been much buzz around the fact that, what exactly will be the storyline of Princess Diana in the coming season? With not much being revealed about the plot of Princess Diana in season 5, fans have been left to speculate about the probable story arc.

As we have seen that season 4 of The Crown ended with Margaret Thatcher%u2019s resignation and so it is expected that season 5 could move forward into the 90s %u2013 the sorrowful decade for the Royal family. It was during this period that Prince Charles and Princess Diana%u2019s marriage sadly fell apart, with the couple taking the decision to separate in 1992. The time was described by the Queen Elizabeth ll as her %u2018annus horribilis%u2019 which translates to %u2018horrible year%u2019.

Soon after, Princess Diana gave her shocking detailed interview in 1995 %u2013 An Interview with HRH The Princess of Wales: BBC documentary series Panorama, 20 November 1995 %u2013 where she spoke out about there being %u201Cthree people%u201D in her marriage, in an apparent reference to Camilla Parker Bowles. Sadly, Prince Charles and Diana%u2019s divorce was finalised in summer 1996 and she officially renounced her HRH (Her Royal Highness) status.

A year later, in 1997, Princess Diana lost her life in a tragic car accident in Paris. Back then, Prince William was 15 and Prince Harry 12. Ever since, both brothers have spoken out about their grief and how it has shaped their lives. Recently, Prince Harry revealed during his new Apple TV+ docuseries ‘The Me You Can’t See’ that he turned towards drugs and alcohol to cover his pain.

Although it is unknown to us whether The Crown season 5 will portray this truly devastating moment in the history of the Royal Family, however, it is very likely that if season 5 doesn%u2019t then season 6 will surely do.

Apparently, if The Crown decides to wait until the final season to show Princess Diana%u2019s death, it would undoubtedly make it an heart-rending end of the series. Also, it  would need enough episodes to make sure that everything was portrayed sensitively. Having said that, it is likely that in season 5, viewers would only see up to, or around, the point of Prince Charles and Diana%u2019s divorce %u2013 which in itself is another important event in the history of the Royal family.
