Addressing the youth of the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said ‘dynasty politics’ was a disease that needed to be rooted out. He was addressing the  valedictory function of the second National Youth Parliament Festival via video conferencing.

“Dynasty politics is a challenge for the country which needs to be rooted out. The days of those who used to fight elections on the basis of their surname are numbered. But the disease of the dynasty in politics is not completely destroyed yet,” the Pm said, according to news agency ANI.

Elaborating on the subject, the PM said that politics needed young people as it was a constructive medium to make positive changes. In India, dynasty politics is a common phenomenon with generations of families taking up politics full time. Prominent among such families are the Gandhis, whose four generations have been in politics starting from Jawaharlal Nehru to his great-grandsons Rahul Gandhi (Congress) and Varun Gandhi (BJP). Among other such families are those of Lalu Prasad Yadav, Ramvilas Paswan, Parkash Singh Badal and Sheikh Abdullah.

On the new National Education Policy, the PM said that it was a step towards nation-building. “We are building an eco-system which will give better opportunities to our youth here,” he said at the functions that were held in the Central Hall of Parliament .

Speaking at the function, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said, “We have decided to run ‘Know Your Constitution’ campaign through the state governments in the entire country.”
