Indian football club East Bengal’s principal owner Hari Mohan Bangur on Friday said that the club had appointed former England international and Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler as its head coach for the next two years, as per a PTI report.

Bangur stated, “We have signed the contract last night (Thursday) and Robbie Fowler is expected to join the side directly in Goa within a week.”

Bangur who has a majority stake in the club said: “As of now, we have offered him a two-year contract which could be extended in due course.”

Former India captain Rennedy Singh will be Fowler’s deputy, Rennedy is also a former East Bengal captain.

Fowler who is Premier League’s all-time seventh-highest goal-scorer with 163 goals to his name, was a product of Liverpool youth academy. He made his senior debut for the team in 1993 and also went on to play for the English national team.

Fowler was the third-highest goalscorers for Liverpool where he played till 2001 before providing his services to Leeds United and Manchester City.

Before joining East Bengal as its head coach, Fowler was with Australian A-League side Brisbane Roar FC, he guided the club to a fourth-place finish last season.

Bangur stated that the first priority would be to make up for the lost time.

“We are already short on preparation and will start with a handicap. So he will assemble the squad as early as possible in Goa. We will look to make a competitive side,” Bangur said.

The 45-year-old has also coached Thailand’s top division club Muangthong United, guiding the team to a third-place finish.
