Eight patients in the ICU ward of a private COVID-19 designated hospital died in Ahmedabad, Gujarat after fire broke out there on Thursday, a fire official said. 

Fire broke out at the Shrey Hospital in Navrangpura area of Ahmedabad during the early hours of Thursday, the official said.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani has ordered a probe in the case and has sought a report within 3 days, reported ANI quoting CM office.

Around 40 other COVID-19 patients at the facility were rescued and shifted to a civic hospital in the city, he said.

The incident has been condoled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. PM took to Twitter and said that he is saddened by the tragic hospital fire. PM also said that he spoke to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Mayor Bijal Patel regarding the situation.

PM further said that the administration is providing all possible assistance to the affected.

The cause of the fire is not known yet.
