Darwin Nunez is scheduled to arrive in England on Monday for a medical after Liverpool agreed to buy the striker for €100 million from Benfica.

Benfica confirmed in a statement that “deal now signed for €75m fee plus add-ons to reach €100m package”.

The 22-year-old Uruguay international has signed a six-year contract and will almost certainly become the most expensive player in Liverpool’s history, surpassing the £75 million paid to Southampton for Virgil van Dijk in January 2018.

Nunez was the highest scorer in Portugal’s top division in the 2021-22 season, scoring 26 goals in total. He also netted in each leg of Benfica’s Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool in April, and Jürgen Klopp praised him after the first game in Lisbon.

“Extremely good-looking boy, eh? And a decent player as well. Really good, really good, you have to say,” the German said. “I knew before, of course, but he played pretty much in front of me with his tough battles with [Ibrahima] Konaté.”

Klopp added, “Physically strong, quick, plus calm around his finish, when he finished the goal off he was really calm. Good, really, really good. How we say in these situations, if he stays healthy, it’s a big career ahead of him.”

Nunez’s career will now include playing in Merseyside as Klopp attempts to revamp his squad. The striker, who has 11 caps and two goals for his country, will be positioned in the centre of Liverpool’s front line, with Luis Diaz to his left and Mohamed Salah to his right.

Meanwhile, Sadio Mané has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich, whereas Roberto Firmino has almost become a squad player. From an attacking standpoint, Diogo Jota of Portugal is also in the mix.

Given his ability and track record as a more orthodox No 9 than the club has had in previous years, Nunez’s arrival might also see Klopp modify Liverpool’s preferred formation from 4-3-3 to 4-2-3-1.

Nunez will be Liverpool’s second acquisition of the offseason, following the arrival of Fábio Carvalho from Fulham. The Premier League and Champions League runners-up have filed a £4 million proposal for Aberdeen’s Calvin Ramsay. Klopp has long admired the 18-year-old right-back, and talks over a transfer worth £4 million in add-ons are ongoing. With the player, an agreement has already been reached.
