“Remembering the great Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar on Mahaparinirvan Diwas. His thoughts and ideals continue to give strength to millions. We are committed to fulfilling the dreams he had for our nation,” Modi wrote on Twitter.

“Babasaheb, who has paved the way for progress, prosperity and equality in the country by giving a futuristic and all-encompassing constitution, I pay tribute to him on Mahaparinirvan Diwas,” Shah tweeted.

“Today we remember Dr Ambedkar’s contribution to nation-building. Working to make India free from all forms of discrimination is the only truthful way to pay homage to him,” Gandhi said on the micro-blogging site.

Born on April 14, 1891, in Madhya Pradesh, Ambedkar relentlessly put efforts for the upliftment of the backward sections of the society, especially Dalit Buddhists. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India, posthumously in 1990.
