The Prairie View High School in Brighton, Colorado was placed on lockdown after one person was shot near Innovations & Options, a high school at South Ninth Avenue and Bush Street on Wednesday. Police said that the victim was taken to urgent care with a gunshot wound.
The shooting did not take place on the school campus. Authorities said that the possible suspects were taken into custody at East 120th Avenue and Salem Street, which is near Prairie View High School, about six miles from Innovations & Options.
Police said the shooting happened around 12:30 pm and the officers on arrival found shell casings in an intersection but did not locate any suspects or victims.
Police confirmed one victim took themselves to urgent care with a gunshot wound that was not life-threatening. It could not be ascertained if the victim was a student or an adult.
Three suspects were taken into custody shortly after one person was injured in the shooting, the Brighton Police Department said. Two were arrested when police pulled their car over in the area of Prairie View High School at East 120th Avenue and Salem Street. The third was taken into custody sometime later.
Prairie View High School is on lockdown “as police investigate possible student involvement,” Brighton police said. At around 3:40 pm, the lockdown was lifted after police cleared the school and surrounding areas. They worked with the district to coordinate a student reunification process.
The following 27J schools were put on secure earlier. At 2:45 pm, the district said an all-clear for these schools have been issued and the secure status has been lifted.
