BTS’ hit single ‘Butter’ has slipped from the top of the Billboard Hot 100 this
week, ending the K-pop group’s 10-week run as the chart-topper. As of the week dated August 14,
the song has slipped to fourth with ‘Stay’ by The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber rising
to the top from the fourth spot last week, according to Billboard.

However,
the track is still the topper in Digital Song Sales, where it has been for a 10th
week running. This week, the sales were down 30% from last week, at 79,200 from
112,900.

For the
week dated August 7, ‘Butter’ garnered 30.5 million radio airplay audience
impressions as of July 29, down 1% from 30.7 million last week, as well as 8.1
million US streams, a decrease of 8% from 8.8 million last week. It sold 112,900
copies, down by 2% from 115,600 last week.

The song’s
reign on top of the chart was the longest of the year 2021, surpassing the eight-week-rule
of Olivia Rodrigo’s “Driver License”. It was also the longest streak achieved by
a group since 1995, when ‘One Sweet Day’ – a song by Mariah Carey and R&B
group Boyz II Men – ruled the chart for 16 straight weeks.

The Hot 100
list blends all-genres of US streaming (official audio and official video),
radio airplay and sales data.

When BTS’ ‘Permission
to Dance’ replaced ‘Butter’ at the summit of the July 24-dated chart, Billboard
said that “BTS is the first act to displace itself at No. 1 with a new leader
and then send the previous No. 1 back to the summit with no other acts holding
the top spot in between”.

The group
also earned 15 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 records, including three with ‘Dynamite’
and one each with ‘Life Goes On’ and ‘Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)’.

According
to Billboard, the band has now become the quickest to reach five No.1s in three
decades since Michael Jackson. The ‘King of Pop’ earned his five No. 1s in nine
months and two weeks in 1987-88, while BTS took 10 months and two weeks to get
there.

‘Butter’ released
in May and has been sweeping charts and streaming platforms, including iTunes
and Spotify, since its release.
