As many as 54 Assembly seats in 10 states will vote in the by-polls, along with the phase II polling in the Bihar Assembly election on Tuesday. Bypolls will be held in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Odisha, Jharkhand, Nagaland, Telangana, Chhattisgarh and Haryana.

People of 28 constituencies in Madhya Pradesh will choose their MLAs on Tuesday. Of the 28 seats, 25 fell vacant after Congress MLAs resigned to join the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in March. This led to the fall of former Chief Minister Kamal Nath-led government and Shivraj Singh Chouhan being sworn-in as the CM for the fourth time. Three other seats fell vacant after the death of the incumbent MLAs.

By-election will be held for eight seats in Gujarat. This was necessitated due to the resignations of Congress MLAs ahead of the Rajya Sabha election in June.

In Uttar Pradesh, bypolls will be held for seven Assembly seats. 

In Karnataka, the Sira seat fell vacant due to the demise of Janata Dal-Secular candidate B Satyaranarayana. The RR Nagar seat fell vacant as Congress MLA Munirathna Naidu detracted to the BJP in July, last year. These two seats will be up for the polls on Tuesday.

In Odisha, the Tirtol seat fell vacant due to the death of Biju Janata Dal’s (BJD’s) Bishnu Charan Das. The Balasore seat fell vacant due to the death of BJP MLA Madan Mohan Dutta. By-election will be held for these two seats on Tuesday.

In Jharkhand, a by-election for the Dumka seat was necessitated as CM Hemant Soren retained the Barhait seat, giving up Dumka. The Bermo seat fell vacant due to the death of Congress MLA Rajendra Prasad Singh.

Nagaland’s Southern Angami-I and Pungro-Kiphire seats fell vacant due to the death of the then Assembly speaker Vikho-o Yhoshu and T Torechu of the Naga People’s Front, respectively. 

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MLA Solipeta Ramalinga Reddy’s death this year necessitated a by-election for Telangana’s Dubbaka Assembly constituency.

In Haryana, the Baroda seat fell vacant after the death of Congress MLA Sri Krishan Hooda.

Bypoll for Chhattisgarh’s Marwahi seat will be held on Tuesday.

Counting of votes for all these seats will be held along with that for Bihar’s 243 Assembly seats on November 10.
