Dehradun, Apr 25 (PTI) Senior Congress leader and Chakrata MLA Pritam Singh on Monday sought an FIR and legal action against three news portals for carrying a misleading report stating that he had resigned. Naming the news portals in a letter to SSP Dehradun, Singh said the misleading news that he had resigned was run on Sunday conspiratorially without confirmation and with an intention to tarnish his image. Singh who went to the SSP's office with a delegation of party leaders to hand over the letter to him personally, requested the SSP to lodge an FIR against the owners and editors of the news portals and initiate appropriate legal action against them for trying to hurt his image and causing him mental stress. Earlier, at a joint press conference with PCC president Karan Mahra, Singh spoke against the news portals for carrying such a misleading piece of news without confirming it. Singh said he has been elected MLA for the sixth time, his father Gulab Singh was also an eight time MLA and he will serve the Congress as long as he can. Singh who was formerly PCC president and also Leader of Opposition in Uttarakhand Assembly was not given any position this time in the Congress when the party's state unit was revamped earlier this month. He is said to have been sulking ever since he was accused of factionalism in a report looking into the factors that had led to the Congress' defeat in the recent assembly polls. The report had been prepared by the party's central observers for Uttarakhand. PCC president Karan Mahra who was also present at the press conference said Pritam Singh had been accused of indulging in factional politics but he had not been heard.There will be a meeting between Singh and the party high command at an appropriate time and everything will be resolved, Mahra said.

Dehradun, Apr 12 (PTI) A meeting between Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and former leader of opposition in the state Assembly Pritam Singh has triggered the speculation of the Congress leader switching his allegiance to the ruling BJP in the near future.The meeting that took place at the chief minister's residence late on Sunday night assumed significance as it came close on the heels of the Congress revamping its state unit in which Singh, a five-time MLA from Chakrata, was apparently sidelined by the party leadership.However, when contacted, Singh dismissed the speculation.Singh, who has held key positions like that of the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president from 2017 to 2021 and the leader of opposition in the Assembly after the death of Indira Hridayesh last year, has not been assigned any major organisational responsibility in the latest revamp of the party's state unit.Karan Mahra, who is said to be close to former chief minister and Singh's bete noire Harish Rawat, has been made the PCC chief, senior party leader and Bajpur MLA Yashpal Arya has been appointed as the leader of opposition and Bhuwan Chandra Kapri, who defeated Dhami in the recently-held state Assembly polls from Khatima, is the deputy leader of opposition.Arya has held the posts of PCC president in the past. He is also a former speaker of the Assembly.The Uttarakhand Congress has long been divided into two factions -- one led by Rawat and the other by Singh.As the Congress looks for factors that may have led to its failure to wrest power from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttarakhand, factionalism has emerged as a possible reason why its performance fell far short of the expectations.Congress's poll observers Avinash Pandey and Devender Yadav prepared a report recently, attributing the party's poll debacle in Uttarakhand to differences among its state leaders.Singh expressed his hurt on being accused of factionalism in the report, but refused to say anything on his meeting with the chief minister.

Dehradun, Mar 30 (PTI) The opposition came down heavily on the government in the Uttarakhand assembly on Wednesday on the issue of rising prices with Congress legislators saying free rations do not mean anything if inflation is not controlled.Inflation has made the life of people miserable. The government is looting with both hands. It is strange that at a time when crude oil prices have gone down drastically in the international market, petrol and diesel prices have crossed Rs 100 and Rs 90 (a litre) respectively, Congress MLA from Chakrata, Pritam Singh, said.The Congress-led UPA had kept petrol and diesel prices under control in 2014 even when crude oil price in the international market was USD 132 a barrel, he claimed.How will the common man survive? Singh asked.Bajpur MLA Yashpal Arya said it was unfortunate that despite the inflation rate touching the skies, there was not even a word on the issue in the Governor's address to the House.If it were a welfare government it would have taken effective steps to control prices. Giving free rations to people becomes meaningless if we cannot rid them of back-breaking inflation, he said.Haridwar (Rural) MLA Anupama Rawat said the price of a LPG cylinder has crossed Rs 1,000 and demanded either a subsidy on it or its free distribution among people at least for a few months. Earlier, in the pre-lunch session of the House, members paid tributesto former speaker Harbans Kapoor and former MLA Gopal Dutt Ojha, who passed away in December last year and January respectively.Harbans Kapoor was an eight-time BJP MLA and speaker of the Uttarakhand assembly from 2007 to 2012.He was remembered as a simple man full of humility despite holding key positions during his long political career and a person who was always in direct contact with the people of his constituency.Ojha was a Congress MLA from Didihat thrice.

Oppn raises issue of inflation in U'khand assembly

Dehradun, Mar 29 (PTI) A vote-on-account of over Rs 21,000 crore was tabled in the Assembly on Tuesday amid criticism by opposition Congress members who contended citing the rules of business that it could not be laid without a discussion in the House on the Governor's address. The vote-on-account tabled by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is for an amount of Rs 21,116.81 crore. It makes a provision of Rs 16,007.63 crore under revenue expenditure and Rs 5,109.18 crore under capital expenditure. An allocation of Rs 3,715 crore has been made for centrally-funded projects, Rs 593 crore for externally aided projects and Rs 270 crore for projects under NABARD. Shortly before Dhami tabled the vote-on-account in the House, Congress MLA from Chakrata Pritam Singh rose from his seat and sought the protection of the Chair saying as per the rules of House business the vote-on-account could not be tabled without a discussion in the House on the Governor's address. His view was endorsed by Congress MLA from Bajpur Yashpal Arya. However, Cabinet Minister Prem Chand Aggarwal said the proceedings of the House for Tuesday had been scheduled after the approval of the assembly's business advisory committee and therefore, the opposition by Congress members to the tabling of the vote-on-account was not justified. Not satisfied with the explanation offered by Aggarwal, opposition MLAs insisted it was in violation of the rules. However, the Chief Minister tabled the vote-on-account amid their mild protest and the proceedings of the House were immediately adjourned for the day. Later talking to reporters outside the Assembly, Pritam Singh said on the very first day of the opening session of the fifth Assembly the state government had murdered democracy by misusing its numerical strength to play with the rules. However, BJP MLA from Vikasnagar Munna Singh Chauhan accused the opposition members of trying to obstruct the tabling of the vote-on-account. On the opposition's contention that the vote-on-account could not be tabled without a discussion in the House on the Governor's address, he said once the House has endorsed the recommendation of the business advisory committee on the schedule for the House's business of the day the point raised by opposition members had no meaning. The House is the master of its own business, Chauhan told reporters.
