Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi talked on Monday again to secure an agreement on the long-standing additional stimulus package aimed to reinvigorate the American economy, reported AFP quoting a Pelosi aide.

The two sides have been negotiating for a few weeks on a follow-up economic package that will set the US economy rolling. This package will come in addition to the $2.2 trillion CARES Act passed earlier in the year, and will seek to mitigate the blows of the coronavirus pandemic that has left millions jobless.

The bill was credit with leveraging the economy but the Democrats and the Republicans are yet to agree on the amount to be spent since the key provision expired two months back.

The negotiations were revived last week with a series of phone calls and in-person meeting between the Treasury Secretary and House Leader Nancy Pelosi who is currently in charge of the House of Representatives.

The Speaker’s deputy chief of staff Drew Hammill stated that the talks had resumed on Monday.

Hammill said, “Speaker Pelosi and Secretary Mnuchin spoke by phone today at 11:30 am for approximately one hour. The two discussed the justifications for various numbers and plan to exchange paper today in preparation for another phone call tomorrow.”

According to the CARES Act added an extra $600 in weekly payments to the unemployed with the motive of propelling consumer demands as COVID-19 eviscerated the US economy. The provision expired in June.

The law created a system of loans and grants for small businesses bearing the brunt of the COVID pandemic due to shutdowns meant to curb the spread of the virus.

President Donald Trump has been asking for a deal but the Republicans and the Democrats are yet to settle on the amount needed to kickstart the economy.

While the Democrats have requested an amount of $2.2 trillion, Republicans are only willing to spend $1.6 billion.

President Donald Trump had on Saturday tweeted “OUR GREAT USA WANTS & NEEDS STIMULUS. WORK TOGETHER AND GET IT DONE. Thank you!”

Facing a re-election battle the passing of stimulus package can help Trump catch up challenger Joe Biden who is currently leading most opinion polls.
