US President Joe Biden on Thursday delivered his remarks on the Israel-Hamas ceasefire a few hours after the conflict de-escalation effort was announced. Biden’s short address touched base and acknowledged the various moving parts in the diplomatic endeavor.

The President kicked off the address by informing that he spoke to his Israeli and Egyptian counterparts, Benjamin Netanyahu and Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi.

Biden said he commended the efforts of Netanyahu which brought the “hostilities to a close in less than 11 days”. The two also spoke about the US-Israel developed ‘Iron Dome System’, which was heavily used in the recent conflict to protect Israeli territory from projectiles fired by Hamas. Biden also vowed support to “replenish the Iron Dome system”.

“I extend my sincere gratitude to President Al-Sisi and the senior Egyptian officials who played such a critical role in this diplomacy”, said Biden in an attempt to acknowledge Egpyt’s role in mediating talks with Hamas.

In his statement, Biden also hinted at an opportunity to broker an Israel-Palestine peace treaty. He said, “I believe we have a genuine opportunity to make progress and I’m committed to working toward it”, reported AFP.

The President left the podium immediately after wrapping up his address, not taking any questions from reporters.

Israel and the Palestinian armed groups in Gaza, Hamas and Islamic Jihad, agreed to a ceasefire on Thursday to end 11 days of the conflict.
