Members of Doctors Against Genocide, a “global health coalition committed to stopping genocide,” found themselves entangled in controversy as they attempted to organize events at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and the White House. With approximately 3,100 followers across Instagram and X, the group initially announced a gathering on December 28 with an “urgent call to action” to “stop the genocide in Gaza.”

The first event was scheduled to take place at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum at 11 a.m., followed by another gathering outside the White House at 3 p.m. Attendees were encouraged to obtain free tickets to the museum and were urged to wear white coats or uniforms, particularly healthcare workers.

However, the Holocaust Museum prohibits activities such as protests or demonstrations on its property, emphasizing its role as the national memorial to the 6 million Jews killed during the Holocaust. The museum expressed its displeasure with the exploitation of Holocaust history and the offense caused to survivors and the memory of victims by such actions.

Following criticism and the museum’s objection, Doctors Against Genocide decided to cancel the event. The museum’s policy against protests is aimed at preserving the solemn nature of the space for remembrance, survivor reflections, and educational purposes.

In response to the backlash, Doctors Against Genocide claimed there were misconceptions about the event, denying accusations of antisemitism. They asserted that the intention was to visit the museum and express empathy for the Holocaust’s horrors while also raising awareness about what they perceive as an ongoing genocide in Gaza.

The group acknowledged that their initial communication lacked clarity and stated that the event was meant as an opportunity to learn from the museum’s initiatives in genocide education and prevention. They expressed a commitment to their organization’s mission dedicated to preventing war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide worldwide. Despite the cancellation of this particular event, the group hinted at future events with more detailed communication.
