Board of Control for Cricket
in India (BCCI) president Sourav Ganguly on Sunday said that the domestic
cricket season will start from January 1, as per PTI report.

The BCCI Apex Committee made
the decision after meeting on Saturday evening. The committee spent a good time
engaging on discussion related to the domestic calendar, which had been halted
abruptly due to the rising number of coronavirus cases in India, as per a PTI
report.

“We have had extensive
discussions on domestic cricket and we have tentatively decided to start the
competitions from January 1, 2021,” reported PTI quoting Ganguly.

Enquired if the system
would be a curtailed one due to rising coronavirus cases, Ganguly
stated that the board won’t be able to complete the entire domestic tournament
for practical purposes.

Ganguly further said, “We
will certainly have the full fledged Ranji Trophy redball tournament. It will
probably not be possible to hold all tournaments.”

The BCCI president stated
that the junior cricket tournament and women’s tournament would be conducted in
the month of March and April.

The former Indian Cricket team skipper stated, “We
also have elaborate plans for all age group and women’s cricket. We will start
with Ranji Trophy and then we will also have the other tournaments between
March and April.”

The 48-year-old further
stated that Indian cricket team touring Australia would be allowed to train during
their quarantine phase.

The BCCI president said,
“Cricket Australia has sent us an itinerary and we discussed the
modalities of that itinerary. We will be playing four Tests and that will end
in third week of January.”

The Indian team will most likely play three
ODIs, three T20Is and four Tests in Australia.

On the home series against England, Ganguly
said that the BCCI is monitoring the situation and the final itinerary will be
prepared in due time.

“The England series is good three-and-a-half to four months away. We still have time. We are monitoring the situation
(COVID-19) which is pretty fluid and will take a call accordingly,” he
said.
