Earthquake tremors were felt in Delhi and neighbouring areas on Friday night. According to ANI, tremors were also felt in Jammu, Uttarakhand and Punjab. The National Centre for Seismology said its magnitude was 6.3 on the Richter scale. 

According to the US Geological Survey, the earthquake originated almost 92 km below the earth’s surface, enabling it to travel to large distances.

According to India’s National Center for Seismology, the epicentre of the earthquake was located 35 km west of the city of Murghab in Tajikistan, whose distance from Srinagar, as the crow flies, is less than 500 km.

Soon after the incident, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted: “Earthquake tremors felt in Delhi. Praying for everyone’s safety.”

However, till now there have been no reports of any loss of life or damage to property.

In Kashmir, strong tremors were felt with residents gathering on streets as the first tremor was followed by a second, lasting at least 20 seconds.

The former Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir Omar Abdullah tweeted: “Not since the earthquake of 2005 have the tremors in Srinagar been bad enough to force me out of the house. I grabbed a blanket & ran. I didn’t remember to take my phone & so was unable to tweet “earthquake” while the damn ground was shaking.”

In Punjab, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh tweeted, “No reports of any damage so far in Amritsar or other parts of Punjab… Top officials of @PunjabPoliceInd & local administration are keeping a close watch on the situation. Praying for everyone’s safety.”

In the Pawan Nagar area of Amritsar, people came out of their houses following the tremors. As per ANI inputs, Vinod, a resident, said “I saw my bed was shaking and came outside with my family. People were standing outside. The tremors were very strong.”  

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who was virtually interacting with students of the University of Chicago at that moment, was heard saying that his entire room was “shaking”.
