A total of
126 passengers are aboard AI-244, Air India’s last commercial flight from Afghanistan’s
capital Kabul
, that took off on Sunday and is scheduled to land in New Delhi tonight,
NDTV quoted sources as saying. Air India’s three-times-a-week flight service
remains uncertain after the Taliban took over Afghanistan. Earlier, a charter
flight to Kabul was cancelled, according to sources.

Flights are
being cancelled to and from Afghanistan because of the increased military
activity in Kabul’s airspace. Airline sources say that it has become extremely
challenging to operate in Kabul’s airspace. An Emirates flight to Kabul was
cancelled on Sunday after the US military took over the airport for its
evacuation purposes exclusively.

The Taliban
forayed into Kabul on Sunday after taking control of much of the rest of the
country on Sunday and held talks with the civilian government. Following the
discussions, President Ashraf Ghani resigned and Mulla Abdul Ghani Baradar of
the Taliban took charge of the interim government of Afghanistan.

Taliban’s
seizure of Afghanistan has caused thousands of Afghans to attempt to flee from
the country. However, with all border check-posts under Taliban’s control,
Kabul airport remains the only way through which Afghans can escape. With
restrictions on airspace mobility, the crisis has deepened.

Meanwhile,
many Afghans, who had run away from their rural homes in the hope of relative
safety in the capital, are spending nights on the streets and parks. ATMs in
Kabul have stopped dispensing cash and people have queued up outside private
banks to withdraw all that they can.

The Taliban takeover of Afghanistan is taking
place as the US gets ready to withdraw all its troops from the war-torn country
by September 11 this year.
