New Delhi, Mar 20 (PTI) The ancient gurukul system of education has played a remarkable role in the holistic and well-rounded development of individuals, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said on Sunday. Naidu wrote this in a Facebook post, referring to his visit to Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya in Haridwar on Saturday. The university, inspired by the vision of a spiritual leader and social reformer of modern India Shriram Sharma Acharya, is a non-conventional centre of higher learning, he noted. With around 1500 full-time residential students and researchers, the university is adopting a gurukul-type system of community living. The institution is devoted to holistic education by combining practical knowledge (shiksha) with spiritual education (vidya) and seeks to provide a comprehensive learning experience to every student, he posted on Facebook. The Vice President said he was reminded of the remarkable role played by the ancient gurukul system in the holistic and well-rounded development of individuals. Naidu said he was also delighted to learn that the university and Gayatri Parivar have been using music and folk songs to fight against social evils such as casteism and gender discrimination and promote nationalism among the masses. The university also has its own gaushala (cow shelter) with over 300 cows of indigenous breeds, he observed. The Swavalamban Kendra produces various cow products using modern and scientific techniques, Naidu said, adding that he is convinced that such initiatives, in line with the Gramodyog concept propagated by Gandhi ji, can provide an alternative source of income to the farmers.

Indore, Jan 31 (PTI) Activists of the Akhil Bhartiya Hindu Mahasabha were booked on Monday for raising slogans in support of Gandhiji's assassin Nathuram Godse a day earlier on the death anniversary of the Mahatma, which is observed nationwide as Martyrs Day. These activists had gathered at Veer Savarkar Square despite prohibitory orders banning such gatherings without permission being in place, said Tukoganj police station in charge Kamlesh Sharma. They have been charged under section 188 of IPC for showing disobedience to order issued by authorities. Assistant Commissioner of Police Dhairyasheel Yevle, who was present at the spot, said an FIR was registered against Hindu Mahasabha activists for demonstrating and raising slogans in support of Godse at Veer Savarkar square, adding that they were prevented from holding an exhibition there. Meanwhile, state Congress spokesperson Neelabh Shukla said stern action should be taken against the Hindu Mahasabha activists and alleged such incidents were taking place due to the patronage given by the ruling BJP.

Sanaur (Pb), Dec 30 (PTI) Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu on Thursday targeted former chief ministers Parkash Singh Badal and Amarinder Singh for allegedly looting the state over the last 25 years.He blamed the previous governments led by Badal and Singh for leaving the state with a heavy debt burden.For 25 years, two chief ministers looted Punjab, said Sidhu while addressing a gathering here.They (Parkash Singh Badal, Amarinder Singh) left the state in such a situation that the youth do not want to stay here, he alleged, referring to youngsters' preference to go abroad.The Congress leader said Punjab is carrying a heavy debt burden.The state does not generate enough revenue to be able to meet its total expenditure of Rs 1.40 lakh crore. It pays Rs 30,000 crore as interest on debt, he claimed.Sidhu said the GST compensation from the Centre will stop in June next year and this will add to the state's fiscal deficit.He also stressed the need to empower panchayats in the state and said it can be done with the implementation of the 73rd Constitutional Amendment that was aimed at allowing gram panchayats to operate as self-governance units.Sidhu said his Punjab model of governance will implement the 73rd Constitutional Amendment to give powers to sarpanches.Without the approval of panchayat secretaries, village heads have no power to work for the welfare of villages, he rued.Later, Sidhu raised the issue in a series of tweets.Punjab Model will revive legendary vision of Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji empowering the panchayats … Freeing them from clutches of officers, decentralising power, giving resources back to the people by ensuring self reliance of villages.
