The 45th Kennedy Center Honors were held on Sunday in Washington, DC, and the red carpet attracted plenty of attention thanks to George Clooney and his wife Amal Alamuddin.

The Ocean’s Eleven star, 61, who is one of the night’s honorees, looked dashing as usual in a black tuxedo, while the Lebanese-British lawyer, 44, wowed in a stunning off-shoulder silver gown.

An annual ceremony called the Kennedy Center Honors honours performers for their lifetime contributions to American culture.

Along with Clooney, Amy Grant, Gladys Knight, Tania León, and Irish rock group U2 also received the Kennedy Center Honors in Recognition of Lifetime Artistic Achievement.

In July 2013, Amal and George had their first encounter at Lake Como in Italy. They went on their first date in London later that year.

The two headed back to Los Angeles after a brief courtship and a few trips. Then, when he was thinking back on a trip to Kenya, George made the decision that he wanted to be with Amal always.

He told THR, “I had a picture of her, looking back, smiling at these giraffes. And I said, ‘I think I’m going to ask her to marry me.’”

The couple married on September 27, 2014, at the Aman Canal Grande Hotel in Venice, Italy, five months after the actor proposed.

After his first five-year marriage to actor Talia Balsman ended in divorce in 1993, Clooney vowed never to be married again. He married the activist and attorney, breaking his promise.

George Clooney is a well-known name in Hollywood, but he is also a political activist and a humanitarian. Since 2008, he has been one of the UN’s Messengers for Peace. Even during a demonstration at the Sudanese embassy in Washington, he was once detained for engaging in civil disobedience.
