Sergio Perez overtook Mercedes' George Russell to lead the Spanish Grand Prix after Charles Leclerc retired. The Red Bull driver was chasing his third career win. However, on Lap 49 Checo was asked to let his teammate Max Verstappen pass. On the Lap 9 on Sunday, the reigning world champion drove into the gravel and dropped to P4. ,At that point we decided, because he was stuck behind George, our best race was converting him to a three stop and as it panned out, that was the preferred strategy. We had two cars on different strategies so it wasn't a straight fight, the Red Bull boss said. ,Checo's tyres wouldn't have made it to the end so that is why he pitted near the end to get that fastest lap. What Checo couldn't see at the time was he had such a long stint to do on that medium tyre and Max had such a tyre advantage, as a team we didn't need to take that risk.

The Mercedes pair of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton were third and fourth fastest in the Saturday morning session.Qualifying for Sunday's race was scheduled to follow the final practice session, held on a warm, sunny day at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. Although large parts of Spain are under a heatwave alert with May temperatures that rank among the hottest in two decades, it was a manageable 32 C (89 F) during the morning practice.The most heat came from the Haas of Mick Schumacher when his brakes failed and appeared to catch fire barely 15 minutes into the hourlong session.Schumacher told his team by radio that “my brakes are burning, my rear brakes are burning” as he overshot his stop. Crew members quickly doused the flames spouting from the back right wheel with fire extinguishers.Leclerc holds a 19-point lead over Verstappen after five races, but Verstappen has the momentum and is coming off consecutive victories at Imola and Miami. Reigning F1 champion Max Verstappen was third and followed by Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez. Verstappen and Perez are second and third in the standings behind Leclerc. Verstappen and Leclerc have split the first four races with two wins each as Ferrari has been incredible since it debuted its new car built under the 2022 regulations. Mercedes, meanwhile, has struggled mightily, and team principal Toto Wolff apologized to seven-time series champion Lewis Hamilton two weeks ago for giving him an “undrivable” car. Hamilton had finished 13th, while Russell was fourth at Imola. In the first practice at Miami, Hamilton was eighth. He showed up at the track wearing all the jewelry he could find in protest of the FIA's crackdown on body piercings and bling during competition. The governing body for F1 says the jewelry is a safety hazard, but Hamilton said he cannot remove his piercings and was willing to miss the race.
