Gita Gopinath, the
Indian-American economist who is serving as the chief economist of the International
Monetary Fund
(IMF) tweeted a picture of herself which has created a lot of
buzz on the internet. The 49-year-old is seen engaging in pre-Diwali festivities
along with former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan and Nobel laureates Esther Duflo
and Abhijit Banerjee. Gita’s husband, Iqbal Dhaliwal who is the Global Executive
Director of J-PAL is also seen in the picture.

The image uploaded on
the chief economist’s Twitter handle is captioned, “Fun pre-Diwali evening with

The picture became
popular quickly and has amassed over 17,400 likes. Some of the best reactions to

Esther Duflo is a French
economist who works as a professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development
Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she was awarded the
Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2019.

Abhijit Banerjee also
works at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Professor of Economics.
He was also awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 2019.

Ms Gopinath will mark
her return to Harvard University in January next year following the end of her
tenure as the International Monetary Fund’s chief economist. She joined the
organisation in January 2019.
