Chad Brown, an award-winning horse race trainer, was arrested in upstate New York on Wednesday and charged with criminal obstruction of breathing, police said Thursday morning.

The Saratoga Springs Police Department’s public information officer, Sgt. Paul Veitch, told Horse Racing Nation that Brown was arrested on Wednesday night. He stated that Brown was in custody and would be formally charged in Saratoga Springs City Court. The court was set to open at 9 a.m. EDT, and Veitch did not reveal whether or not Brown would appear.

Brown, a native of nearby Mechanicville, New York, is the top trainer at Saratoga this summer, with 27 victories from 110 races and purses totaling $3,310,020. Between 2016 and 2019, he won four Saratoga training championships and four consecutive Eclipse Awards as the country’s top trainer. Brown won his second American classic this year when Early Voting won the Preakness.

With regard to the reports of Brown’s detention, the New York Racing Association has not yet released a statement. Therefore, there was no hint of any potential consequences for Brown.

On Thursday at Saratoga, Brown entered two horses in the races. Nabokov is participating in the eighth race on the card, an allowance. The ninth event, a New York Stallion Series Stakes, features Robyn and Eli. In races scheduled for Friday and Saturday, he also had 14 additional horses.

Brown has ten Eclipse Award winners under his tutelage, including Stacelita, Big Blue Kitten, Lady Eli, Flintshire, and Horse of the Year Bricks and Mortar. After receiving the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Trainer in 2016, he won his first Triple Crown race in the 2017 Preakness Stakes with Cloud Computing. In addition, he received the Eclipse Award in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
