Attorney General Merrick Garland stated Friday that U.S. Attorney David Weiss has been named special counsel in the ongoing investigation against the president’s son Hunter Biden.

The “ongoing investigation” of President Joe Biden’s son would be overseen by Weiss, “as well as for any other matters that arose or may arise from that investigation,” the Justice Department said in a statement. Weiss, headquartered in Delaware and currently in charge of the Hunter Biden investigation, requested to be appointed special counsel on Tuesday, and Garland concurred that it was “in the public interest” to do so, according to the attorney general.

Is Garland’s appointment of David Weiss as special counsel illegal?

After negotiations to resolve charges related to taxes and guns broke down and a trial was now likely, the prosecutor, David Weiss, requested the new authority from Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The nation is now in new ground as a result of Garland’s decision, which he revealed on Friday. Three special counsels at the Justice Department are currently looking into the current president, his son, and the former president.

Garland furthered Weiss’ independence from the Justice Department by appointing him as a special prosecutor as he began an unusual trial against the president’s son and Republicans said the department was politicised.

A senior Justice Department official claims that the decision to name a special counsel was not communicated to the White House or Hunter Biden’s legal counsel in advance.

The Trump-appointed US attorney who is investigating Hunter Biden has been given special counsel status after plea talks between the Justice Department and the president’s son fell apart.

Weiss will continue to hold the position of US attorney for the District of Delaware even after accepting this new position, according to Garland. Additionally, he stated that Weiss will “not be subject to the day-to-day supervision of any official of the department” in his capacity as special counsel.

Weiss, according to him, “must comply with the regulations, procedures, and policies of the department.”

According to a statement from a Trump official on Friday, Weiss “failed to bring proper charges after a four-year investigation” and “appears to be trying to move the case to a more Democrat-friendly venue.” Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee claimed in a statement that Weiss “can’t be trusted” and had “already signed off on a sweetheart plea deal that was so awful and unfair.”

The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), declared that Weiss’ nomination as special counsel “doesn’t seem right.” Weiss, according to House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La. ), is a “sham special counsel.”
