Electra and Viola, a Lesbian penguin power couple has adopted, incubated and raised an egg from another couple at Oceanografic Valencia in Spain. Oceanografic Valencia is one of the largest aquariums in Europe.

The caregivers of the aquarium noticed the Penguin couple displaying nesting behaviors. After observing this behavior, the aquarium decided to give the couple a fertile egg to raise. Two other gentoo penguin couples also have welcomed chicks in the current breeding season.

“Although same-sex couples are common in more than 450 species in both zoos and nature, it’s the first time this has happened in our aquarium. Welcome to the world, little one!” Oceanogràfic València stated on its Facebook page.

In a similar incident, Sphen and Magic, a gay penguin “power couple” at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium in Australia had twice hatched and fostered chicks. Rocky and Marama were another lesbian penguin couple who adopted a chick in 2019 and is now raising the world’s first “genderless” penguin chick.

According to Yale University, homosexuality is seen in approximately 10% of “prevailing species across the world.” They are also said to have a positive effect on a species’ survival because of their social benefits.
