Delhi Capitals registered their two consecutive wins after beating Punjab Kings by 17 runs on Monday at the DY Patil Stadium. DC, however, did not get off to a good start as they lost their illustrious opener, David Warner, in the very first ball of the match as the southpaw fell to Liam Livingstone. It appeared that it was Warner’s last-minute decision to face the first delivery of the game that backfired. Actually, if you saw Sarfaraz, he had already taken the guard and he trudged reluctantly towards the other end and now David Warner is going to do that? Delhi Capitals won their second game in a row for the first time in IPL 2022 after their bowlers together helped defend Mitchell Marsh-fueled 159 against Punjab Kings. For the time being, Delhi leads Royal Challengers Bangalore in the points table. As batter after batter failed to stick in on a track with some help, it crumbled in the face of some accurate spin bowling. Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel were also persistent in the middle overs, picking up four wickets in eight overs. Jonny Bairstow scored 28 runs in 15 balls while they were on the powerplay. But everything changed when Anrich Nortje got him trapped in the deep off a pull. This was swiftly followed by a double break from Shardul Thakur, who not only gave away 10 runs in his first over but also caught both Shikhar Dhawan, caught behind while squeezed for space, and Bhanuka Rajapaksa, slicing a great hit to point, in the same over as Punjab finished the powerplay on 54/3. Navi Mumbai, May 16 (PTI) Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant was happy that his team could finally buck the trend of winning one and losing the next game in the IPL while a dejected Punjab Kings leader Mayank Agarwal wanted to forget his team's inept batting show in a hurry. Delhi Capitals beat Punjab Kings by 17 runs to move to fourth place in the points table with a superior net run-rate compared to Royal Challengers Bangalore, who also have 14 points, while Punjab remained in the IPL play-offs hunt only in theory. Playing throughout the tournament, we have been losing one game and winning one game. That's something we wanted to change as a team and we got it, Pant said after the match. His opposite number Agarwal was grim and was trying hard to control his anger which was writ large on his face. We need to speak about the way we went about things with the bat, but that's about it. It's a game to forget, Aagrwal stated. We didn't bat well. Between overs 5 and 10, we lost too many wickets and that's where we lost the game. I thought it was definitely chaseable for the batting we have and the wicket wasn't as bad as it seemed. We just lost too many wickets between the 5th and 10th over and lost the game there, the Punjab Kings skipper added. From his body language, it was evident that Agarwal was not at all convinced that his team has an iota of chance of qualifying in play-offs. I think we haven't yet played our best cricket yet and we look forward to doing that in the last game, he further said. Winning captain Pant said the plan was to bat deep on a track where Punjab spinners Liam Livingstone and Harpreet Brar did bowl well. The only thought process was to take it deep. We saw the spinners bowling well in the wicket. The wicket was slow. Pant also said that Prithvi Shaw remains a highly doubtful starter for the next game though he has been discharged from the hospital after recovering from typhoid.

Navi Mumbai, May 16 (PTI) Arshdeep Singh and Liam Livingstone snared three-wickets each as Punjab Kings restricted Delhi Capitals to 159 for 7 despite Mitchell Marsh’s fine half-century in their IPL game here on Monday. Marsh (63 off 48 balls) first added 51 runs with Sarfaraz Khan (32), who played a cameo, and then another 47 runs with Lalit Yadav (24), after DC lost opener David Warner (0) off the first ball of the innings. DC scored at a brisk pace at the start after being asked to bat but they suffered a a middle-order collapse, losing three quick wickets. It was Australian Marsh, who anchored the DC innings. He completed his fifty with a boundary in the 17th over. He hit four fours and three sixes but ran out of partners. The move to open bowling with Livingstone (3/27) worked as he removed Warner, who gave a sitter to Rahul Chahar at backward point. Marsh and Sarfaraz then tried to steady the ship. Marsh hammered back-to-back sixes off pacer Kagiso Rabada (1/24), including one lofted shot as Delhi added 15 runs in the second over. Sarfaraz was brutal on left-arm orthodox bowler Harpreet Brar (0/29), hammering him for a maximum, a slog sweep and two successive boundaries, as Delhi fetched 15 runs in the third over. Sarfaraz hammered five boundaries and a six as Delhi raced to the 50-run mark in the fifth over. But Sarfaraz’s cameo ended after he mistimed a lofted shot off Arshdeep Singh (3/37) with Chahar taking a running catch. Then Marsh and Lalit mixed caution and aggression. At 86/2 after 10 overs, the stage was set for a big score. But Punjab pegged back DC, by grabbing three quick wickets and reducing the opposition to 112/5. First, Arshdeep used his slow bouncer to remove Lalit and then Livingstone sent back Rishabh Pant (7), who was stumped by Jitesh Sharma. Livingstone had his third wicket, when he removed Rovman Powell (2), whose skier was caught by Shikhar Dhawan in the long-off region. Marsh, who added 37 runs with Axar Patel (17 not out), upped the ante in the 18th over, but it was too late. Wickets kept tumbling for Delhi even as Punjab bowlers conceded 43 runs in the last five overs.

Mumbai, May 13 (PTI) Adversities can make people see the lighter side of life and that's what Virat Kohli is doing at the moment while trying to figure out how he is getting dismissed in every possible manner during this IPL, RCB skipper Faf du Plessis said on Friday. RCB lost to Punjab Kings by 54 runs and Kohli was again out for 20 as he now has only one half-century in 13 games. He (Kohli) is seeing the lighter side of it, every single way that you can possibly get out, is happening to him. That's how the game works, Du Plessis said after the match. However, the RCB skipper made it clear that even in bad patches, one needs to keep trying which is precisely what his predecessor is doing. All you can do is to keep trying hard, work hard and stay positive. He played some good shots tonight, obviously would want him to carry on. Bad patches happen to all of us, he's taken it in the right note. The RCB squad plans to take a few days off before its final league game on May 19 and as of now even a win might not ensure a passage into last four. Will take a day off and then see how we can switch on for a game that's a must-win one for us. One more net session isn't going to make you a better player, it's about making yourselves stronger in the mind. If we play to our potential, we are a very strong side. After waiting so long to return to the IPL, Dhawan cursed his misfortune while lying on a hospital bed. “This year, when I was finally picked, I got injured. I thought this is it, I might not get a chance to play in the IPL again. There was a storm going inside my head. But thankfully, everything worked out. I was able to make a comeback. The nerves are settled now,” Dhawan said. He missed the first six games of the season during the recovery period. Since his return to the league, Dhawan began his campaign with a game against Chennai Super Kings and caught everyone’s attention immediately because of the transparent face shield he wore. He also held his nerve to dismiss Chennai Super Kings’ MS Dhoni in a tight finish. But it was the shield that had become the talk of the town. In his return to the IPL, Dhawan has bowled to some of the most dengerous batters like Liam Livingstone, Jonny Bairstow, and Sharukh Khan in the nets. New Delhi, May 10 (PTI) Jitesh Sharma, one of the finds of IPL 2022, has attributed his wide range of strokes to his penchant for learning a new shot every year.The 28-year-old wicketkeeper batter, who has been playing limited overs cricket for Vidarbha since 2014, has grabbed attention with his audacious strokeplay for Punjab Kings. Not only he has established himself in the playing eleven after making his IPL debut, Punjab have relied heavily on him and Liam Livingstone to finish games.In his seven innings, including three 30-plus scores, Jitesh has scored 162 runs at a strike rate of 167.After his 18-ball 38 in the last game Rajasthan Royals, the great Virender Sehwag backed his inclusion in the Indian team for the T20 World Cup as a reserve keeper batter. Grateful that Sehwag sir has said this about it me but I can only do what is in my control and selection is certainly not, the soft-spoken cricketer told PTI on Tuesday. I didn't expect that I would have a season like this. As a cricketer you can only try to have the right mindset and focus on performance, the rest is uncontrollable. That is what I tried to do. Jitesh has impressed with his ability to find the boundaries all around the ground. In the last game, he beautifully flicked in-form leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal for a six and two balls later, he flat batted Prasidh Krishna's slower ball over the mid-off fielder.Jitesh has not done a lot of experimentation in the IPL but makes a conscious effort to learn a new shot every year. He has mixed skills and power effectively to play multiple impact innings for Punjab over the course of the season.I have worked hard on this (on his range of strokes). Playing straight is my strength. It is down to preparation again. I also try to learn a new shot every year or learn something new. His big-hitting skills have been enhanced under the guidance of Punjab's power-hitting coach Julian Wood. While during tournaments I don't try to do anything different. What I have known all these years I am doing that only. There are minor changes I have made including in my power game, the right posture and having a strong base. This is what our power coach has taught us. He doesn't have a go-to shot but he loves hitting the straight drive. My favourite shot is a shot which gives me maximum runs. I don't mind even when I nick one to the boundary. I don't have a go-to shot but I really like playing the straight drive, said Jitesh.He also feels that skill and power in the modern game go hand in hand.Every technical batter is a power-hitter. Cricket is a mixture of technique and power. If you can add power to a sound technical game, it can only be good. In his own franchise, he is getting to learn a lot from Livingstone on the power aspect of batting while he is picking Jonny Bairstow's brains on wicketkeeping. Outside that, he also got to speak with his role model M S Dhoni. I have also learned a lot from Amabati Rayudu when he was a professional player with Vidrabha. At Punjab, Livingstone talks to me about how to bat on different surfaces, who to attack and when. He is also very relaxed while batting, that is another thing I have picked up from him. With Jonny, since he knows about keeping in all conditions, the talk is mainly about the glove work and leg movement. Amongst other teams, I was lucky to get some time with Mahi bhai. I have also learnt a lot by just observing him over the years. He just told me to 'play situations' as the result is not in your control. He has already attracted attention like never before with his exploits in the IPL but Jitesh has stuck to what brought him success in domestic cricket. In domestic cricket too you tend to hit from ball one but in IPL you don't get as many loose balls. The bowlers are much quicker and more consistent at this level. After Sehwag's endorsement, has he started thinking about the India cap? Every cricketer wants to play for India and I am no different. But there is no additional pressure on me as I am someone who thinks about preparation and don't look beyond the next game which we have against RCB (on Friday).
