Malala Yousafzai, a Nobel Prize laureate and education activist, announced her marriage with her partner Asser Mallik on social media on Tuesday. The 24-year-old said she got married in a small ceremony in United Kingdom’s Birmingham. 

“Today marks a precious day in my life,” Malala wrote. “Asser and I tied the knot to be partners for life. We celebrated a small nikkah ceremony at home in Birmingham with our families. Please send us your prayers. We are excited to walk together for the journey ahead.”

In the social media posts, Malala can be seen wearing traditional attire while her partner is carrying a black suit.

The 24-year-old Pakistani human rights campaigner who was shot by the Taliban for daring to want an education posted images on Twitter of her celebration on Tuesday with Asser Malik and her family.

Yousafzai was targeted by the Taliban for her relentless objections to the group’s regressive interpretation of Islam that limits girls’ access to education. She was shot while returning home from school in Pakistan’s scenic Swat Valley in 2012, according to reports from Associated Press.

She later came to the English city of Birmingham for medical treatment and her family eventually joined her. She went back to school as soon as she could but kept campaigning for the right to an education for others. She graduated from Oxford in June 2020.

The national ambassador for United Nations Women Pakistan, Muniba Mazari, responded to Malala Yousafzai’s post on Instagram and wrote, “So so happy for you my little one! Masha Allah My love and regards to all family.”

“So happy for you my bestie!! Such a precious day that we witnessed today,” her friend and fellow education activist Vee Kativhu wrote on social media.

Other known personalities who wished the 24-year-old included climate activist Greta Thunberg, American actor Reese Witherspoon among many others.
