Marathi Bhasha Diwas is annually celebrated on February 27 on the birth anniversary of notable Marathi litterateur Vishu Vaman Shirwadkar. He was popularly known as ‘Kusumagraj’.

Kusumagraj was a famous poet, novelist, short story writer and humanist. He wrote almost 16 volumes of poems, 3 novels, 8 volumes of short stories, 7 volumes of essays and 18 plays and 6 one-act plays. 

The Marathi language contains the oldest literature of modern Indo-Aryan languages.

His birth anniversary turned as Marathi Rajbhasha Gaurav Din after his demise in 1999. 

How Marathi Bhasha Diwas is celebarted 
This day is celebrated across Maharashtra. People take utmost pride in the language of their state. People celebrate their culture and focus on preserving their root language to eradicate any sought of language barrier.

Cultural events in schools and colleges mark the beginning of the celebration of Marathi Bhasha Diwas. However, due to the ongoing pandemic there are a few restrictions prevailing. The UGC (University Grants Commission) directs the educational institutions to celebrate February 27 as ‘Matrubhasha Diwas’. 

Famous Marathi songs are sung such as the ’Mayaboli Marathi’ and the life events of Vishu Vaman Shirwadkar is narrated in front of the audience to enlighten people and foster thought provoking ideas in the minds of the civils.
