Maruti Suzuki Alto became the only car in India to hit the 40-lakh sales mark, adding another accolade to its immense popularity on Indian Roads.

Ruling the auto sales chart in the country for over a decade, it has been a favourite for Indians due to its affordability, convenience to drive, low maintenance and great re-sale value. According to the company, Alto has maintained its position at the top of the passenger vehicles’ segment in the country for 16 consecutive years.

Executive Director – Marketing and Sales, Shashank Srivastava told Hindustan Times, “Alto has been ranked as the No.1 selling car in India for 16th year in a row and we are immensely proud to announce another remarkable milestone of 40 lakh cumulative sales.” He added, “This has become a sales record never achieved by any other Indian car.”

Launched in 2000, Alto became India’s best-selling car for the first time, four years later. It crossed 10 lakh in sales by 2008 and 20 lakh in 2012.

Although it has faced some tough competitions over the years, regular upgrades and maintaining an affordable price has kept it on top of the charts. Emotional bonds with customers too have played a major role.

Srivastava said, “Over the years, brand Alto has established a strong emotional connect with our customers. We would like to dedicate this achievement to all our proud and happy Alto family members.”
