Cancer has been plaguing
millions of life and yet no cure has been found yet. In 2020, India
had recorded around 13.9 lakh active cases of cancer according to the National
Cancer Registry Programme Report 2020.

The disease
renders people with abated efficiency and immunity. To stay healthy and cancer-free, people resort to nutritious meals or running an extra mile or stretching
the yoga session by another 15 minutes.

But a recent study has found that an item, that we include in our everyday diet, could be poisoning our immunity.

A recent Israeli study has
unveiled the effect of dairy products and meat on antibodies in the blood
capable of augmenting the risk of cancer.

The study found a
direct molecular link between the consumption of meat and dairy products and
its impacts on the antibodies in the blood that advances chances of developing
cancer.

What’s the connection?

So, the link between the dairy
products and cancerous antibodies can be understood this way.

There exists a sugar molecule
named Neu5Gc, found in the tissues of Mammals, so
humans initiate developing antibodies to Neu5Gc during their infant years and
that is the period when we are first exposed to dairy products. These tissues are not found in poultry or fish items.

The study published in the BMC Medicine Journal was conducted under the leadership of Dr. Vered Padler Karavani, Department of Cell Research and Immunology at the Shmunis School of Biomedicine and used samples from NutriNet-Sante, France’s extensive nutritional survey.

While it was articulated in the study that
these antibodies augments risk of cancer development, any direct linkage
between the antibodies and such consumption could not be found.

“We found a significant
correlation between high consumption of Neu5Gc from red meat and cheeses and
increased development of those antibodies that heighten the risk of cancer,”
Dr Padler-Karavani was quoted as saying in the study.

“For years there have been attempts
to find such a connection, but no one did. Here, for the first time, we were
able to find a molecular link thanks to the accuracy of the methods used to
measure the antibodies in the blood and the detailed data from the French diet
questionnaires,” she concluded.

However, considering the
findings of the study, the instances of rapid Cancer growth in consumers with heavy
dairy product consumption can be well computed.

Dr. Pedler and her team also
created an index named, Gcemic index based on the observations of the study.
This index ranks foods in order of their gravity to increase the antibodies,
which means an increase in the risk of getting cancer.
