Mobile Police Department in Alabama was responding to an active shooter situation at a Government Plaza since Monday afternoon. Officials said that a man appeared across the street from a Government Plaza with gunshot wounds.

When police officers went to help him, the man pulled a gun on them. The standoff reportedly started since then.

The man is currently sitting in a gray Honda. SWAT armoured vehicles have closed down on him with immediate effect. The man reportedly shot from the back of the gun first and then stepped out to point the gun at his head. He then stepped back into the car again and the standoff continues with him.

The government Plaza is located at 205 Government Street in Mobile Alabama. Reports say that all of Government Street was closed and the nearby Bankhead tunnel was also shut on both sides. The latest update says that Government Plaza has opened up while the Bankhead tunnel continues to be closed.

Mobile Police Chief Paul Prine said that the man is not mentally stable and they have brought in a mental health expert to help deal with him. SWAT teams were also brought in to help with the situation.

“We are working to get the individual out of the car so we can get him some help,” Prine said. He clarified that it is not an active shooter situation and they are working to bring the standoff to a peaceful conclusion as soon as possible.

The threat became explicit at one point when the man pointed the gun at his head and tried to commit suicide.

Police told local media that a robot was used to deliver a cell phone to the man so that he can be in constant communication with the police. It is suspected that the man’s wound is self-inflicted, however, confirmation will come only after the standoff comes to an end.
