Telangana State Formation Day is observed on June 2 every year. The day marks the triumph of the Telanagana movement that eventually led to the formation of the youngest state of India. Telangana was formed in 2014 and turned 7 on Wednesday. The state shares its capital, Hyderabad, with Andhra Pardesh

When the first assembly election in the newly-formed state was held, the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) party achieved victory and Kalvakuntla Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), a prominent face of the Telangana movement, was elected as the first chief minister of the state.

What is Telangana Movement?

Telangana movement referred to almost six decades of struggle for the creation of a new state from the pre-existing Andhra Pradesh. The prime reason behind such agitation was for better resources, education and more job opportunities that might get diverted due to the inclusion of the Telugu-speaking population from the coastal Andhra region.

After years of agitation, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on July 1, 2013, passed a resolution that recommended the formation of a new state, Telangana, separate from Andhra Pradesh.
