Former Union
Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday questioned the Bharatiya Janata
Party (BJP)-led central government over not revealing the identity of the
donors who contributed to the PM Cares Fund.

In a series of tweets, the senior Congress leader noted that the auditors of the
PM Cares Fund have confirmed that the fund received Rs 3,076 crore in a span of
five days from March 26 to March 31.

“But the
names of these generous donors will not be revealed. Why? Every other NGO or
Trust is obliged to reveal the names of donors contributing more than a
threshold amount. Why is the PM CARES FUND exempt from this obligation?”
Chidambaram posted.

“The donee is
known. The trustees of the donee are known. Why are the trustees afraid to
reveal the names of the donors?”, asked the former finance minister.

Chidambaram
had earlier accused the Centre of shielding the PM CARES Fund from any kind of
scrutiny and raised several questions regarding the setting up of the fund.

His
comments came after the Supreme Court, on August 18, refused to direct
the Centre to transfer the contributions made to the PM CARES Fund for battling
the COVID-19 pandemic to the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF).

The trust
was formed to receive financial assistance from people across the country and
overseas to provide relief to those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.
