Margot Robbie has revealed in a cover story with Vanity Fair that a Pirates of the Caribbean film starring her in the lead role has been shelved. The Australian actor was set to carry the PoC mantle forward after Disney severed ties with Johnny Depp when his personal issues with former wife Amber Heard came to light.

In the interview, Robbie said, “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led — not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story — which we thought would’ve been really cool,” further adding, “But I guess they don’t want to do it.”

The Wolf of Wall Street star’s record in franchise movies has been a mixed bag. While the 2016 Suicide Squad was panned critically, the 2020 film, Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey met with positive responses. However, Robbie’s performances in both movies were applauded by critics and audiences alike.

Disney was initially planning to make a PoC film starring Robbie besides another reboot of the franchise. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer was set to be associated with both films.

In May, Bruckheimer had told The Sunday Times, “Yes. We’re talking to Margot Robbie. We are developing two Pirates scripts — one with her, one without”. He had then said that there was no chance of Johnny Depp being associated with the franchise again. However, after he won the lawsuit against Heard earlier this year, Disney could try and bring back the superstar to the franchise he helped build.

Besides the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, Robbie also spoke about her love for movies in the Vanity Fair story. She detailed her process to get into character for her upcoming film, Babylon. Regarding her love for movie sets, the 32-year-old actor said, “I grew up in a very loud, busy house, and so I feel safe and comfortable when there is chaos around me. I think it’s why I love movie sets.”
