Pixar Studio introduces first main gay character with short film ‘Out’.

A nine-minute animated film seeks to discover new storytelling techniques and experiment with new production workflows.

The film’s narrative gets thumbs up from Glaad, an  L.G.B.T.Q advocacy organization.

Pixar Animation Studio follows a gay man’s journey into acceptance as he relocates to new city with his boyfriend as their central lead in new short film “Out” . This is the first time the studio has introduced first gay main character, reports nytimes.com.

Grey, the lead character of the film, is going through his own dilemma of coming out in the open in front of his parents as he plans to relocate to a new city with his boyfriend.

According to a statement by Jim Morris, the president of Pixar, on the studio’s website, the nine minute animated film is one of seven from Pixar’s SparkShorts program and seeks “to discover new storytellers, explore new storytelling techniques and experiment with new production workflows.

“These films are unlike anything we’ve ever done at Pixar, providing an opportunity to unlock the potential of individual artists and their inventive filmmaking approaches on a smaller scale than our normal fare,” he said.

Glaad, the L.G.B.T. advocacy organization, applauded the film’s gay narrative.

“Over the past few years, L.G.B.T.Q. characters and stories have become common in the kids and family entertainment space with little controversy, but with large celebration from L.G.B.T.Q. families with children who have longed to see themselves represented,” said Jeremy Blacklow, director of entertainment media at Glaad.

“By centering on a young gay man, ‘Out’ just raised the bar for inclusion in kids and family programming,” Blacklow added.

Before this, In March, actor Lena Waithe voiced Officer Spector, a secondary character who is referenced as a lesbian, in the animated film “Onward.” Similarly In last year’s “Toy Story 4,” viewers saw two mothers dropping off and picking up their daughter from a day-care center in the background.
