Poet Rabindranath Tagore was awarded knighthood in 1915, two years after he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. The Indian poet, however, returned the title on May 31, 1919, to protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre on April 13, in which British troops fired on a large crowd of unarmed peaceful Indians in a closed space known as the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, killing several hundred people and wounding many hundreds more.
