The four-day festival of Pongal, celebrated mostly in the southern states of India, is starting on Friday. Pongal, corresponding with Makar Sankranti, is celebrated in the month of January after harvesting crops like rice, turmeric, sugarcane, etc.

Pongal is a celebration of a golden harvest where farmers across express their gratitude to the Sun and Lord Indra. On the occasion of Pongal, people clean their homes and make ‘Kolams’ or rangolis to celebrate the festival. Rangolis or Kolam are made as some people believe they bring luck to the house.
