Captain of the Algerian National team, Mahrez, could be seen as the architect to City’s superlative performance against a strong PSG side in the knockout fixture. He had secured a lead for Pep Guardiola and company from a free kick in the first leg.

The Algerian forward tucked a goal in the 11th minute to give City the early advantage against a Mbappe-less Paris. It was just after the hour mark that Mahrez scored his second goal following a devastating counter-attack from the Sky Blues.

Who is Riyad Mahrez?

Coming from the French divisions, having played for Quimper and Le Havre, Mahrez got his big break when he moved to Leicester City in 2014. He played a key role in Leicester’s promotion to the Premier League in his first season. In 2016, Mahrez’s 17 goals powered Leicester City to their first Premier League win in their 132-year history. He was also named the Algerian Footballer of the Year and the PFA Players’ Player of the Year that season. He signed for Manchester City in 2018, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup in his first season.

Now, with a berth in the UCL finals, Riyad Mahrez will be eyeing to add another jewel in his career. Pep Guardiola’s side will either play Real Madrid or Chelsea in the May 29 final in Istanbul.
