Rampur (UP), Apr 20 (PTI) Amid signs of discontent among Muslim leaders with the Samajwadi Party and its ally Rashtriya Lok Dal, RLD president Jayant Chaudhary on Wednesday met the family of jailed SP legislator Azam Khan and promised to keep in touch with them. Earlier this month, Azam Khan’s spokesperson Fasahat Ali Khan had accused SP president Akhilesh Yadav of ignoring the senior legislator and the Muslim community, sparking speculation of a rift in Uttar Pradesh's main opposition party. Chaudhary met Azam Khan's wife Tazeen Fatma and his son Abdullah Azam at their home here. “The displeasure of the family is with the system,” the RLD leader told reporters after the closed-door meeting. “The family is going through tough times and I am here to meet them because of my personal attachment with the family. I will remain in touch with them, he said. Khan is lodged in Sitapur jail since February 2020 in connection with cases of criminal intimidation, encroachment and theft. He won the recent assembly elections from Rampur Sadar for the 10th time while his son Abdullah bagged the district’s Suar seat. Azam Khan’s spokesperson Fasahat Ali Khan recently said though Muslims voted overwhelmingly for the SP, Akhilesh Yadav never uttered a word for the community. The spokesperson had indicated that he was speaking in his personal capacity but wanted Azam Khan to take a “decision”, apparently on staying with the SP. Commenting on the recent developments, Chaudhary said, It has nothing to do with opposing anyone. There is freedom to voice one's views even in the party. I have no say on the issue. I have only come here because of my personal attachment with the family. Recently, RLD state president Masood Ahmed resigned saying that Chaudhary was not speaking openly on issues related to the minority community. RLD secretary Tariq Parvez also quit the party’s minority cell on Tuesday, accusing the party president of not taking up issues related to Muslims. When asked about the resignations, the RLD leader said, I recently came to know about this. Sometimes small issues remain unanswered and often don't reach me. I will call them for a meeting. On the bulldozing of “illegal” property across UP of people accused of crime, Chaudhary asked if Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath or the police decide if anyone is guilty or not. “Otherwise there is no need for a judiciary in this country,” he said. “If the country has a Constitution and the judiciary, and the rights of the citizens are still intact, these things should not have happened, he added. Thirty-four Muslims won in the recent UP Assembly polls. Out of them, 32 are from the SP and the remaining two from the RLD.

Meerut (UP), Mar 29 (PTI) Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Chaudhary on Tuesday constituted a three-member committee to study the Uttar Pradesh election results and streamline the party organisation.The decision was taken at the RLD's national executive meeting held in Delhi.In the meeting, Chaudhary proposed a committee comprising three members of the executive committee to study the Uttar Pradesh Assembly results and recommend organisational reforms, RLD spokesperson Surendra Sharma told PTI.This committee will visit districts of Uttar Pradesh and submit its report by April 15, he said.This committee will recommend changes in the basic structure of the party on the basis of the election review report. Baba Hardev, K P Chaudhary and Chaudhary Praveen Singh have been nominated to this organisation reform committee, Sharma said.The RLD, which had contested the Uttar Pradesh polls in alliance with the Samajwadi Party, had fielded candidates on 33 seats and won eight of them.During the national executive meeting, Chaudhary also expressed concern over the growing economic crisis in the country and said the hike in prices of diesel, petrol and LPG on a daily basis is burdening the common man, he said.Party members called for strongly fighting the upcoming municipal elections in Uttar Pradesh and the Rajasthan Assembly elections.The next national executive meeting of the RLD will be held on April 24, Sharma said.

Lucknow, Mar 28 (PTI) The Rashtriya Lok Dal has appointed its MLA Rajpal Baliyan as leader of its legislature party and MLA Gulam Mohammad as deputy leader. While Baliyan is the RLD MLA from Budhana in Muzaffarnagar district, Gulam Mohammad won the assembly poll from Siwal Khas in Meerut. The two appointments were made after the two MLAs were elected unanimously as leader and deputy leaders of the RLD’s legislature party in its meeting held on Saturday, the party said in a statement on Monday. In the meeting, the party’s MLA from Chhaprauli in Baghpat district, Ajay Kumar, was made the chief whip and legislator Mohd Ashraf Ali from Thana Bhawan in Shamli district was made deputy whip, it said. RLD lawmaker Pradip Guddu from Sadabad in Hatras district was made treasurer of the legislature party, the release added. The party has also conveyed its decisions on various appointments in its legislature wing to Principal Secretary Pradip Kumar Dubey of the state legislative assembly, the release said further. The RLD’s newly-elected legislature party leader Baliyan had won from the Khatauli constituency in 1996 and 2002. This time he defeated BJP's Umesh Malik from Budhana, considered a stronghold of Jat-dominated Khaps in western Uttar Pradesh. Sisauli, the village of Naresh Tikait and Rakesh Tikait of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Tikait), who had led the agitation against the three agricultural laws of the Center, also falls in the Budhana area. Ajay Kumar who was made chief whip was elected from the Chhaprauli seat which was once represented by the former prime minister, late Chaudhary Charan Singh. Ashraf Ali, who was made deputy whip, defeated the then Sugarcane Minister Suresh Rana, causing a major upset in the recent elections in Thana Bhawan. Jayant Chaudhary-led RLD contested the assembly elections in an alliance with the Samajwadi Party and won eight seats. The party had only one MLA in the previous assembly.

Meerut (UP), Mar 24 (PTI) Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Jayant Chaudhary on Thursday junked suggestions that his party did not perform as per expectations in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, saying the votes they got are enough to form government in many states. The Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), an ally of the Samajwadi Party, had contested 33 seats in western Uttar Pradesh, which had been a hotbed of the farmers’ stir against the Centre’s farm laws. Against expectations, the party could win only eight seats in the region, which has 126 Assembly constituencies across 24 districts. Denying that his party did not get expected results, Chaudhary on Thursday said, Our party got 26 lakh votes, which are not less. In these votes, governments are formed in many states. The youth and farmers gave full support to the RLD. In many seats, we lost by very less votes, he added while talking to reporters. Chaudhary, however, said his party will hold a meeting to discuss shortcomings. Taking a lesson from our mistakes, we will move forward, he said. He also attacked the ruling BJP, accusing it of leaving decency in elections. The alliance candidates were beaten up in the presence of police. We all have seen this, he said referring to the upcoming elections to the upper house of the state legislature. When asked whether he would attend the swearing-in ceremony of Yogi Adityanath, Jayant said, First of all, I have not got any invitation yet. Even if I get one, I will not go there.

Lucknow, Mar 19 (PTI) In a further setback to the Jayant Chaudhary-led Rashtriya Lok Dal days after its defeat in the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, its state unit president Masood Ahmed resigned from the party on Saturday accusing leaders of the SP-RLD alliance of selling tickets and behaving in a dictatorial manner. In a letter to Chaudhary, Ahmed levelled serious allegations against him and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav. Akhilesh-ji gave tickets to whomever he wanted while collecting money, due to which the alliance was forced to contest elections without booth presidents, he wrote. He also accused the chiefs of the RLD and the SP of acting like dictators and cited the case of Swami Prasad Maurya, who quit the BJP to join the SP just before the polls. Maurya-ji was sent to Fazilnagar without information and he lost the election. Akhilesh-ji and you acted like dictators because of which the alliance had to face defeat. My suggestion is that this alliance should be deferred until Akhilesh-ji gives equal respect, he said. He alleged that tickets were sold in the assembly elections. In an attempt to collect money, the announcement of candidates was not done in time and the elections were fought without preparations. On almost all the seats, nominations were filed on the last day. None of the candidates were told from where they would contest. During the most precious time, all the workers were sitting at the feet of either you or Akhilesh-ji and no preparation for the elections could be made, he claimed. SP had three candidates for each seat, which sent a wrong message to the public. The result was that the alliance lost at least 50 seats by a margin of 200 to 10,000 votes, he said. Ahmed alleged that even after his cautioning, Chandra Shekhar Azad of the Azad Samaj Party was humiliated, due to which the Dalit vote shifted from the SP-RLD alliance to the BJP. In the recently concluded assembly elections, the Samajwadi Party won 111 seats and the Rashtriya Lok Dal eight. The BJP bagged 255 seats in the 403-member assembly.

Lucknow, Mar 12 (PTI) The victory margin of 49 candidates was less than 5,000 votes in the recently-concluded Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls.According to the results announced on Thursday, 25 Samajwadi Party (SP) candidates were defeated by less than 5,000 votes while a similar fate awaited three nominees of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).The SP and the RLD contested the polls in an alliance.Eighteen Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates also lost the poll battle by less than 5,000 votes. Allies of the saffron party -- Nishad Party and Apna Dal (Sonelal) -- had to face defeat by a very small margin on two seats and one seat respectively.The narrowest victory margin was registered in Dhampur, where BJP's Ashok Kumar Rana defeated SP's Naeem-ul-Hasan by 203 votes. Sakendra Verma, the BJP candidate from Kursi, won the poll contest against SP's Rakesh Verma by 217 votes.The SP candidates in Aliganj, Aurai, Bahraich, Chhibramau, Etawah, Faridpur, Jalalabad, Bindki, Jalesar, Katra, Madhuban, Manikpur, Madiyahun, Mohammadi, Moradabad Nagar, Nakud, Phulpur, Salon, Shahganj, Shravasti, Sitapur, Sultanpur and Tirwa lost by less than 5,000 votes. The victory margin in six of these seats was less than 1,000 votes.The RLD candidates lost from Baraut, Nehtaur and Bijnor by 315 votes, 258 votes and 1,445 votes respectively.BJP's Kamlesh Saini was defeated by SP's Swami Omvesh by just 234 votes from Chandpur. The saffron party lost the Ramnagar seat by 261 votes and the Isauli seat by 269 votes.The margin of defeat for the BJP candidates was less than 5,000 votes in Basti Sadar, Bhadohi, Bisauli, Dibiyapur, Dumariaganj, Ghazipur, Etawah, Jasrana, Kithor, Meja, Patiali, Farenda, Raniganj, Sareni and Zaidpur. It was less than 1,000 votes in six of these seats.The Nishad Party lost the Handia and Kalpi seats to the SP by 3,543 votes and 2,816 votes respectively. The Apna Dal (S) nominee was defeated by the SP candidate from Bachhrawan by 2,812 votes.The five biggest victory margins were registered by BJP candidates. Sunil Kumar Sharma recorded a historic victory in Sahibabad with a margin of 2.14 lakh votes. Pankaj Singh's victory margin in Noida was 1.81 lakh, while Amit Agarwal polled 1.18 lakh votes more than his nearest rival in Meerut Cantonment.Purushottam Khandelwal and Srikant Sharma of the saffron party trounced their opponents by 1.12 lakh and 1.09 lakh votes from the Agra North and Mathura seats respectively.Of the 403 Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh, the BJP bagged 255, while its allies Apna Dal (S) got 12 and the Nishad Party got six.The SP won 111 seats, while its ally RLD got eight seats and the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) got six seats.The Congress and the Jansatta Dal Loktantrik got two seats each and the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) got one seat.

Lucknow, Mar 11 (PTI) Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday thanked the people of Uttar Pradesh for increasing its tally by two-and-half times and said his party has shown that the BJP's seats could be reduced. Congratulating all the MLAs of the SP-led alliance, Yadav asked them to discharge their responsibilities sincerely. “Heartiest thanks to the people of Uttar Pradesh for increasing our seats two-and-half times. We have shown that the seats of the BJP could be reduced. The reduction (in the number of seats) of the BJP will continue. More than half the confusion and deceit ('chalava') has been cleared. The rest will be cleared in some days. The struggle will continue in public interest,” Yadav wrote in his first tweet in Hindi. In his message to the new MLAs of the SP-led alliance, he wrote, “Heartiest congratulations...All the new MLAs should discharge the responsibility of serving the people and helping them. Thanks to every single student, unemployed youth, teacher, woman, supporter of the old pension system, farmer, labourer and professional.” As per the Election Commission's website, the BJP has won 255 seats, while its allies Apna Dal (Sonelal) and NISHAD party have won 12 and six seats, respectively. The SP has won 111 seats, while its ally Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) has won eight seats. The Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party, another ally of the SP, has won six seats. The Congress has won two seats, while the BSP has won one. The BJP has secured a vote share of 41.3 per cent, while the SP has bagged 32.1 per cent of the votes. The BSP and the Congress managed to secure 12.9 per cent and 2.33 per cent votes, respectively. RLD received 2.85 per cent of the votes.

Its alliance partners Apna Dal (Sonelal) bagged 12 and NISHAD Party six.Samajwadi Party has won 110 seats and was leading on one seat. Its ally RLD bagged eight seats and SBSP six. The Congress and Jansatta Dal Loktantrik led by Raghuraj Pratap Singh won one seat each and BSP got one.Among the ministers who lost is outgoing deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya who lost to the Samajwadi Party's Pallavi Patel by 7,337 votes in the Sirathu seat.Patel is the vice-president of Apna Dal (K), a Samajwadi Party ally.Sugarcane minister Suresh Rana lost the Thana Bhawan seat in Shamli district to the RLD's Ashraf Ali Khan by over 10,000 votes.Another minister, Chhatrapal Singh Gangwar, was defeated by Ataur Rehman of the Samajwadi Party on the Baheri seat in Bareilly district by 3,355 votes.Rural development minister Rajendra Pratap Singh alias Moti Singh lost the Patti seat in Pratapgarh to the Samajwadi Party's Ram Singh by 22,051 votes.Chandrika Prasad Upadhyay, another minister in the Adityanath government, lost to Anil Kumar of the Samajwadi Party in Chitrakoot by 20,876 votes.Anand Swaroop Shukla lost the Bariya seat in Ballia district to Samajwadi Party's Jaiprakash Anchal by 12,951 votes. Minister Ranvendra Singh Dhunni was defeated by Usha Maurya of Samajwadi Party at Hussain Ganj seat in Fatehpur district by 25,181 votes.Lakhan Singh Rajput was defeated by Pradeep Kumar Yadav of the Samajwadi Party on Dibiyapur seat in Auraiya district by 473 votes and the state's basic education minister Satish Chandra Dwivedi was defeated by SP candidate and former speaker of the assembly Mata Prasad Pande at Itwa seat in Siddharthnagar district by 1,662 votes.Another minister, Sangeeta Balwant was defeated by SP's Jai Kishan at the Gazipur seat by 1,692 votes.

11 UP ministers fail to win their seats

Ghaziabad, Mar 10 (PTI) All five BJP MLAs, including minister Atul Garg, retained their seats in Ghaziabad, even as Sunil Kumar Sharma, contesting from Sahibabad constituency, won with a record 2.14 lakh vote margin, poll results showed on Thursday.Sharma got 3.22 lakh (or 67.03 per cent) of the total votes counted, defeating his nearest rival Amarpal Sharma of the Samajwadi Party who polled 1.08 lakh votes, the Election Commission website showed.In 2017, Sharma was the biggest winner in terms of vote margin. His victory margin was over 1.50 lakh then.Atul Garg, a minister in the Yogi Adityanath government, retained his Ghaziabad seat with a victory margin of 1.05 lakh votes over nearest rival SP's Vishal Verma.Garg got 1.50 lakh (or 61.37 per cent) of total votes counted, while Verma bagged 44,668 (or 18.25 per cent) votes, EC data showed.In Loni, BJP's controversial MLA Nandkishor Gurjar won in a close contest with RLD's Madan Bhaiya, a former MLA and influential leader of the Gurjar community. Nandkishor won with a margin of 8,676 votes.In Muradnagar seat, Ajit Pal Tyagi emerged victorious once again as he crushed the nearest rival RLD's Surendra Kumar Munni by 97,095 votes.In Modinagar, Manju Siwach continued her winning streak. She got 34,619 more votes against nearest rival RLD's Sudesh Sharma.

Noida, Mar 10 (PTI) BJP's Dhirendra Singh was leading from Jewar in Gautam Buddh Nagar district of Uttar Pradeh on Thursday by a margin of over 20,000 votes, according to poll trends.Singh was leading over his nearest rival RLD's Avtar Singh Bhadana by 20,204 votes at 1 PM, the Election Commission website showed.Singh, who had polled 49 per cent of the votes in 2017 to emerge victorious, is considered close to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and a key person behind the upcoming airport in the constituency.Bhadana, who was an MLA from Meerapur, had quit the BJP ahead of the polls and joined the Rashtriya Lok Dal, which fielded him from Jewar.In the run up to the assembly elections, Jewar had witnessed a caste-based conflict over the legacy of Samrat Mihir Bhoj.

Noida, Mar 10 (PTI) Rashtriya Lok Dal candidates were leading in nine of the 33 seats where it was fighting the Uttar Pradesh assembly election, according to poll trends.RLD candidates were leading in Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat, Baraut, Chhaprauli, Budhana, Khatauli, Rampur Maniharan, among others, according to the Election Commission.RLD's Ashraf Ali Khana was leading over BJP's Suresh Kumar Rana, a minister in the Yogi Adityanath-led government, with a margin of 4,853 votes at 12.45 PM, the trend on the EC website showed.Jayant Chaudhary's RLD had entered into an alliance with the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party for the UP assembly polls. Counting of votes for Uttar Pradesh elections was underway. Final results were yet to be declared.

RLD leading in nine seats in UP

Lucknow, Mar 10 (PTI) The ruling BJP seems to be on course to retain power in Uttar Pradesh, with poll trends on Thursday showing the party leading in 247 seats as against 103 of its nearest rival Samajwadi Party.The state has 403 assembly seats and 202 seats are needed to form a majority government. Trends are available for 391 seats so far. Prominent candidates who have secured a lead include Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath from Gorakhpur, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav from Karhal, Shivpal Yadav from Jaswant Nagar, and Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya from Sirathu. The BSP and the Congress were leading in five and four seats respectively. The Apna Dal (Sonelal) was leading in 11 seats and the RLD in seven, according to latest trends. Two candidates of the Jansatta Dal, including Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya in Kunda seat, were leading.Congress Legislature Party leader Aradhana Mishra Mona was leading in Rampur Khas constituency by over 500 votes.BJP candidate and minister Shrikant Sharma was leading from Mathura constituency.The BJP candidate is leading in the temple town of Ayodhya over his nearest SP rival.According to the website of Election Commission, Ved Prakash Gupta of the BJP is leading over his SP rival Tej Narayan alias Pawan Pandey by 656 votes.

Noida, Mar 9 (PTI) Workers and activists of the Rashtriya Lok Dal and farmers' outfit Bharatiya Kisan Union have pitched tents near election offices in various districts of western Uttar Pradesh to keep an eye on assembly polls' vote counting on Thursday.While the RLD has fought the just-concluded polls in tie up with the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party, the office-bearers of the BKU, which was part of the anti-farm laws protest against the BJP-led Centre, insists it is an “apolitical” group.Voting in 113 assembly seats across 20 districts of western UP had taken place on February 10 and 14.“Several RLD workers across districts in western Uttar Pradesh have been camping near centres where the counting of votes will take place on Thursday. Some have been there for last two-three days in view of reports of EVM mishandling in other parts of the state,” an RLD worker in Baghpat told PTI.Similarly, BKU members and activists in Muzaffarnagar, Shamli, Meerut, Baghpat, among other places, are also keeping an eye on poll centres where the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are kept, the union's spokesperson Dharmendra Malik said.BKU national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait had also given a call to farmers to secure the EVMs on the voting day, the union's spokesperson Saurabh Upadhyay said “Apart from guarding the country's border and agriculture, farmers should also be ready to guard the vote. There is no trust in deceitful leaders,” Tikait had tweeted in Hindi on March 5.Earlier on Tuesday, SP candidate from Hastinapur Yogesh Verma was seen looking at an EVM strongroom through binoculars as he stood atop his open gypsy car.The visuals of Verma's acts went viral on social media, while later in the day, the SP chief accused the BJP of “stealing” EVMs in the wake of reports that the voting machines were being transported in various districts, including Varanasi, against rules.According to Uttar Pradesh Police, a total of 250 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) have been provided to all the districts of the state for March 10 duty.According to officials, a CAPF company usually has an operational strength of around 70-80 personnel.“Out of these, 36 companies have been earmarked for EVM security and 214 companies for counting and law and order duty. Besides the CAPFs, 61 companies of PAC have also been provided to all districts,” police said.“Along with these, 625 gazetted officers of UP Police, 1,807 inspectors, 9,598 sub-inspectors, 11,627 head constables and 48,649 constables have also been put on duty,” it added.

Noida, Mar 8 (PTI) Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) president Jayant Chaudhary on Tuesday said exit polls are a point of view he does not agree with and claimed that it is a way of creating mental pressure.The RLD chief, whose party contested the Uttar Pradesh Assembly election in a tie-up with the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP), also wondered from where those involved in exit polls got their data from.His remarks came a day after Yadav dismissed the pre-poll surveys that showed that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had an edge over its rivals in the just-concluded Uttar Pradesh election.Until the EVMs are opened, no one can know the results. There is a process for exit polls. No exit poll person was seen at the polling booths, I do not know from where they got the data. This is a point of view and I do not agree with it. It is a way of creating mental pressure, Chaudhary said in a brief statement shared by his party.Earlier in the day, the RLD chief took a veiled potshot at the BJP over the keenly-awaited election results and the exit poll predictions.Exit poll ka kya karenge jab vote koko le gayi? he asked in a tweet in Hindi, referring to the fictional Koko bird from the folklores of western Uttar Pradesh and Haryana.Chaudhary said the workers of the SP-led alliance struggled hard during the election and now, they need to patiently cooperate during the counting of votes.Several exit polls have predicted a victory for the BJP and its allies in the Uttar Pradesh election, which was held over seven phases from February 10 to March 7. Mathura , Mar 7 (PTI) A man, claiming himself to be a member of the Gaurakhshak Dal, a cow vigilante group, on Monday issued a video addressing Congress leader Pradeep Mathur and RLD leader Kunwar Narendra Singh. The action would be taken against youth after a written complaint has been received, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Grover said. The threat has been issued to four-time Mathura MLA and former leader of Congress legislature party Mathur and Kunvar Narendra Singh, state vice president of RLD. Four people suffered injuries in a clash after they visited the home of a local resident, alleging that beef was stored there, police said here on Sunday. The incident took place in the Manoharpura area under the Kotwali police station when members of the Gaurakhshak Dal, a cow vigilante group, knocked at the door of a local resident.

Noida, Mar 1 (PTI) Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) president Jayant Chaudhary on Tuesday condoled the demise of an Indian student who died during Russian shelling in Ukraine. Chaudhary also urged the Centre to quickly evacuate other Indians stranded in the war zone. Earlier on Tuesday morning, Naveen Shekarappa Gyanagoudar, a student from Chalageri in Karnataka's Haveri district, died in Kharkiv city of Ukraine, marking the first Indian casualty in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to officials. My heartfelt condolences to Naveen Shekharappa's family. GoI needs to put all efforts to ensure safe evacuation of all Indians stranded in the war zone, Chaudhary tweeted. Earlier in the morning, he had shared a clip of a panic-struck RLD worker from Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district in a video call with his daughter, who along with several other Indian students, was stuck 4 km off Chop border in Ukraine. The harsh truth is students stuck in Ukraine and particularly on the Polish border are paying for India's ambivalent stand and GoI's lack of foresight and preparedness, the RLD chief had tweeted on Monday. A destination for many MBBS students from India, the Kharkiv city is witnessing increasing fighting between the Ukrainian troops and Russian forces. The Centre has launched Operation Ganga for evacuation of Indian nationals from the war-hit region.

Chetan Chauhan had won the 2017 assembly elections when the BJP swept Uttar Pradesh winning 312 of UP’s 403 assembly seats. Chauhan had beaten her closest rival Javed Abbas by a margin of 15,077 votes. Javed Abbas had contested that election on an SP ticket. West Uttar Pradesh is voting on Thursday in a crucial first of seven rounds of elections to the largest state assembly in India. Of the 58 constituencies voting today, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had won 53 in 2017. It swept the region again in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. All on the dint of the powerful Jat vote in the region. Has anything changed?,Yes. A year-long protest by Jat farmers against new farm laws with its Uttar Pradesh epicentre in the western region has had the potential to apply the brakes on that march. The BJP undertook damage control just before the state elections, with its government at the centre repealing the new laws. Was that enough? ,The BJP takes on as its main rival, an alliance between the Samajwadi Party and the Rashtriya Lok Dal. The coming together of the two parties is an attempt to consolidate the Jat-Muslim vote, polarised after deadly communal riots in the region in 2013. ,Numbers game,Winning big in the first phase is a definitive head start towards government formation. These 58 constituencies make up more than one-fourth seats on the route to a majority - which in Uttar Pradesh's 403-seat assembly is 202. ,In the last election in 2017, the BJP had won 53 or 91% of these seats. Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party (SP) and Mayawati's Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) had won two each. The Rashtriya Lok Dal, now spearheaded by Jayant Chaudhary, had won only one seat. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections a whopping 91% Jats voted for the BJP. The farmers' anger, however, has allowed the RLD -- Jayant Chaudhary's father Ajit Singh founded the party and his grandfather Chaudhary Chara Singh was Prime Minister and a powerful farmer leader -- to make its way back into the community's good books. What percentage of Jat voters will shift away from the BJP is seen as the key number that will determine Thursday's election. ,Jat-Muslim equation,Jats and Muslims are the two most influential communities in west UP. Clashes between the two communities led to deadly riots in 2013. The effects of the polarisation were seen months after when the Jats, traditionally seen as an RLD votebank, voted in big numbers for the BJP in the 2014 parliamentary elections. And ever since. However, through the farmers' agitation, many Jat farmers have accused the BJP of being anti-farmer, not least Rakesh Tikait, a powerful leader of upper caste Jat farmers from the region. Tikait, who had famously declared in 2017 that he had voted for the BJP, has been attacking the BJP-led government over the controversial farm laws it had brought, and now withdrawn. Western UP has an aggregate share of rural population of 58.4%, significantly lower than 81.1% in the rest of the state, according to the 2011 Census.
