Rapper Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers III, Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie, Duran Duran and A Tribe Called Quest were amongst the first-time nominees for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This year’s class will be announced in May, with an induction ceremony planned for later this year.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Rock Hall, is a museum and hall of fame in Cleveland. It documents the history of rock music and the artists, producers, engineers, and other notable figures who have influenced its development.

The institution on Wednesday announced 17 artists and groups being considered for Rock Hall induction, including Rage Against the Machine, Pat Benatar, Dionne Warwick, Carly Simon, Judas Priest and Beck.

Along with Eminem, Beck and Simon have also been nominated for the first time. The former will be soon seen playing at the Super Bowl Halftime Show with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar. This was his first year eligible for the Rock Hall.

Artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years before they’re eligible for induction. Now, the ballots will be sent to music professionals and a public vote will also be conducted.

Guitarist Wayne Kramer, who leads MC50, is hopeful this will be the year the group gets in.

“I’d be happy to see it happen. Being on tour for the last many years and just seeing the reaction to the music of the MC5, I think (the latest nomination) is on time. I think it’s an authentic and honest reflection of the appreciation for the mark the MC5 represents in rock music. I think the band’s influence shows up across the board in contemporary music, so I think (induction) would be a sweet token of appreciation,” he said, as per The Oakland Press.

“The MC5 never dig go along with the program, so I’m not surprised that the music business wouldn’t recognize the band. But, y’know, enough’s enough.”

Duran Duran singer Simon Le Bon thanked fans on Twitter for their support over the years. “This distinction is due in large part to the fact that we have an army of fans around the world who have unwaveringly supported us for the past four decades,” he wrote.

The other nominees are Kate Bush, DEVO, Eurythmics, Fela Kuti, MC5 and the New York Dolls.
